02:39 <Durka> does anyone know how to install apache web server on linux (debian)
02:41 <BabyBug> apt-get install apache2
02:41 <Durka> its that simple?
02:41 <Durka> and why "apache2" :O
02:42 <BabyBug> If all you want is a simple server, then yup it's that simple
02:42 <BabyBug> because it is apache2 in the repos and not apache1 =)
02:43 <Durka> hehe ok
02:43 <luke-jr> O.o
02:43 <luke-jr> bzr is interesting
02:43 <BabyBug> What made you say that?
02:43 <luke-jr> if I accidentally type 'bzr diff' in a Subversion checkout, bzr imports it
02:43 <BabyBug> I thought you're pro svn? =P

02:47 <Lucifer> well, I emailed the guy and asked if he could find 10-15 hours/week of work for me, so I don't have to keep looking, and he can keep me close ;)
02:47 <Lucifer> we'll see how that goes, I suppose
02:48 * ct|kyle wonders when the parade will be tomorrow
02:48 <BabyBug> You should come up with an idea that can earn you money Lucifer!

02:51 <Lucifer> I am gonna quit

02:51 <Lucifer> isn't that what I said last time?
02:51 <ct|kyle> .:] Twisted Rats [:. Fortress (1/32): .:] Corn.
02:51 <BabyBug> Durka, by default, usually /var/www/
02:51 <Lucifer> I probably should, since I can't even pay rent right now, and won't be able to unless I either borrow a ton of money, or start working a new job immediately
02:51 <Durka> hehe i just found it
02:51 <Durka> thnx tho
02:51 <Lucifer> my job at the school starts again tomorrow, though, maybe something will turn up
02:52 <Lucifer> Durka: I recommend you setup a vhost and don't mess with the default vhost
02:52 <Durka> what do u mean
02:52 <Lucifer> I can let you download a vhost file that I use, you can just change a couple of paths and the server name
02:52 <Lucifer> look in /etc/apache2/sites-available
02:53 <Lucifer> you can just copy the default file, change the paths and name
02:53 <Durka> ...meaning
02:53 <ct|kyle> heh 8 non CT server running sty+ct :)
02:53 <Lucifer> then do a2ensite yoursite
02:53 <Lucifer> ok, virtual hosts
02:53 <Durka> ct|kyle: 6 are mine :P
02:53 <Lucifer> there are two ways to have one single machine host many webservers
02:53 <Lucifer> one is for the machine to have several IP addresses
02:53 <Lucifer> the other is to use name-based hosting, when the machine only has one IP address
02:54 <Lucifer> presumably you've only got one IP address, and the default apache2 configuration is for name-basted vhosts
02:54 <Lucifer> in /etc/apache2/sites-available are all of your vhost config files
02:54 <Lucifer> there is only one in the default installation, called "default"
02:54 <ct|kyle> Durka: only 3 say TR
02:54 <Lucifer> if you copy that, then symlink to your copy from /etc/apache2/sites-enabled, and restart apache2, you will have another host
02:54 -!- madmax [n=madmax@unaffiliated/madmax] has quit ["ø"]
02:54 <Lucifer> if you do that, you can put the webroot anywhere
02:54 <Durka> ct|kyle: 4 do
02:55 <ct|kyle> ya :P
02:55 <Durka> and im running the 2 VCL ones
02:55 <Lucifer> if you modify the default file in any way, you could have config file merging conflicts whenever you update apache2
02:55 <ct|kyle> ah ok
02:55 <Durka> Lucifer: why do i wanna put the webroot anywhere
02:55 <Durka> whats wrong with where it is
02:55 <Durka> ct|kyle: for server_ip
02:55 <Lucifer> it's a pain to deal with :)
02:55 <Durka> do i have to put a #
02:55 <ct|kyle> i think i miscounted LOL had to have been 9, 2 by smoothice and 1 by id
02:56 <Durka> or can i put durka.ath.cx
02:56 <Lucifer> you'd put durka.ath.cx
02:56 <Lucifer> I have a file you can download that'll be painfully obvious what to change and what you can leave alone
02:56 <Durka> but why do i want to do that?
02:57 <Lucifer> several reasons
02:57 <Durka> o
02:57 <Durka> i think i get it
02:57 <Lucifer> one is because if you install any other web packages, they'll go in /var/www and it fills up
02:57 <Lucifer> another is because apache2 already has lots of stuff in there, and you don't want to delete it or else your package manager will hate you
02:58 -!- nsh22 [n=nsh22@bas3-barrie18-1177706508.dsl.bell.ca] has joined #armagetron
02:58 <Durka> ok
02:58 <nsh22> hey hey hey
02:58 <Durka> then send me that file pl0x?
02:58 <Durka> :D
02:58 <Lucifer> change ServerName, ServerAdmin, DocumentRoot, and the path in the <Directory> tag
02:59 <Lucifer> I have a site with a DocumentRoot somewhere in my home directory because it's convenient ;)
02:59 <Lucifer> but I learned awhile back that it's straightforward to have /www/* for websites I host
02:59 <Lucifer> so that's what I do
03:00 -!- nsh22 [n=nsh22@bas3-barrie18-1177706508.dsl.bell.ca] has quit [Remote closed the connection]
03:01 <Durka> ok im totally lost and confused
03:01 <Durka> what do u want me to do?
03:02 <Lucifer> download that file, save it to /etc/apache2/sites-available
03:02 <Lucifer> change the stuff I told you to change to whatever the appropriate values are
03:02 <Lucifer> then:
03:02 <Lucifer> cd /etc/apache2/sites-enabled
03:02 <Lucifer> sudo ln -s ../sites-available/whateveryounamedit 001-whateveryounamedit
03:02 <Lucifer> sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
03:03 <Lucifer> then make the directories to match the new DocumentRoot
03:03 <Lucifer> chown -R durka:www-date /path/to/your/new/docroot
03:03 <Lucifer> er
03:03 <Lucifer> chown -R durka:www-data /path/to/your/new/docroot
03:03 <Lucifer> if you want the webserver to be able to write to it:
03:03 <Lucifer> chmod -R g+w /path/to/your/new/docroot
03:04 <Durka> and why am i doing this
03:04 <Lucifer> to simplify adminning your box
03:04 <Lucifer> look, if it's too complicated for now, don't sweat it
03:04 <Lucifer> I'm just trying to throw out a little tip that I know will save you a lot of headache in the long run, but if it's too much for right now,
03:04 <Lucifer> don't worry about it
03:04 <Lucifer> I'll probably be here when you need to know
03:04 <Durka> in the long run?
03:05 <Lucifer> but you're like me, and you're going to want to run several sites on that server at one point or other, I guarantee it
03:05 <Durka> no
03:05 <Lucifer> yes
03:05 <Lucifer> :)
03:05 <Durka> i dont want to lol
03:05 <Lucifer> maybe not right now, but you will. Oh yes, you will.
03:05 <Durka> i just want to put a few files in the www dir
03:05 <Lucifer> (yoda voice)
03:05 <Durka> ok
03:05 <Durka> when i do

• Website was created by nelg
• Design:
» Layout is loosely based on an old design by Durf.
» Icons on the tools page were originally by Royce, new icons added will try to follow some of the design language.
» Various other icon selections include icons from Crystal, crystalsvg, oxygen, and breeze icon themes.
» Other icons: fontawesome

is a site that has tools, maps, and other various items. It orignally only existed as a server control panel, but I slowly began adding stuff such as a homepage and tools.
----
This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
