00:50 <z-man> a user?
00:51 <Your_mom_arma> sorry, what happened?
00:51 <z-man> nothing much more than what I told you :)
00:51 <z-man> wife fell, broke her foot/lower leg, was brought to the hospital.
00:52 <Your_mom_arma> what an unlucky start to the new year
00:52 <z-man> she'll be in there when our return flight should be, so I'm a bit rotating trying to figure out how to change the flight :)

02:44 <luke-jr> smoothice: Apache
02:44 <smoothice> luke-jr: If a customer wanted lightttpd would you oblige?
02:45 <luke-jr> smoothice: I don't see the point..
02:45 <luke-jr> what does lighttpd do that apache doesn't?
02:45 <smoothice> luke-jr: It's faster?
02:45 <PinkTomato> it's not faster, just lighter
02:46 <smoothice> Isn't faster lighter?
02:46 <luke-jr> no.
02:46 <luke-jr> lighter can be simply less features, not less bloat
02:46 <PinkTomato> In fact it could mean slower,
02:46 <luke-jr> Apache is pretty good
02:47 <PinkTomato> yeah, if you have the resources, use apache :)
02:48 <luke-jr> PinkTomato: he's talking about running lighttpd for him, even tho I already run Apache for my other sites
02:48 <PinkTomato> ah so you would use the same process
02:49 <luke-jr> well, it means I'd be running both Apache *and* lighttpd
02:49 <luke-jr> which seems silly
02:49 <PinkTomato> yes it does :)
02:49 <smoothice> lol
02:49 <luke-jr> smoothice: do you plan to use PHP?
02:50 <smoothice> luke-jr: yeah
02:50 <luke-jr> even if lighttpd is slightly faster than Apache, PHP will easily make that difference irrelevant
02:50 <smoothice> ok
02:50 <luke-jr> especially since PHP is faster with Apache
02:50 <luke-jr> (mod_php vs CGI)
02:51 <smoothice> luke-jr: If you charged $30 or more a month for apache,svn,1-2 arma servers and I could get a VPS for $20 a month... what's the justification?
02:51 <smoothice> For your services
02:52 <Lucifer> when something breaks, you yell at luke?
02:52 <smoothice> Is that fun?
02:52 <Lucifer> if something breaks on your VPS, you're the one who gets yelled at :)
02:52 <Lucifer> yes, it is fun
02:52 <smoothice> lol
02:52 <luke-jr> I'm not sure a $20 VPS can pull all that off too well, in the first place. ;)
02:52 <Lucifer> indeed, a VPS is an entire OS running in a virtual machine
02:52 <luke-jr> and as Lucifer said, big difference between unmanaged and managed
02:52 <smoothice> ok
02:53 <smoothice> Drop the arma servers..
02:53 <smoothice> You'd probably charge around $20 for that then right?
02:53 <smoothice> for lets say
02:53 <luke-jr> depending on bandwidth, I suppose
02:53 <smoothice> 60GB storage
02:53 <luke-jr> :O
02:53 <smoothice> lol
02:54 <PinkTomato> what you need 60GB for!?
02:54 <smoothice> meh
02:54 <smoothice> bragging purposes?
02:54 <smoothice> :P
02:54 <luke-jr> that's more than half my CT dedi's disk
02:54 <luke-jr> 2/3 of the free space XD
02:55 <smoothice> I don't know.. just trying to justify your services vs. VPS vs. my own services
02:55 <luke-jr> smoothice: to rephrase managed vs unmanaged, notice that if you have a problem with some service on your cheapvps, it's $75/hr ;)
02:55 <smoothice> luke-jr: Or you could just reinstall the vm...
02:56 <smoothice> luke-jr: and start over for free
02:56 <luke-jr> smoothice: if you don't mind the downtiem and data loss
02:56 <smoothice> luke-jr: you make backups?
02:56 <luke-jr> smoothice: not regularly
02:56 <smoothice> luke-jr: You get lucky?
02:57 <luke-jr> varies from each week to every few months
02:57 <luke-jr> mainly when stuff changes a lot ☺
02:57 <luke-jr> most of the time, the only changes are Arma logs
02:58 <PinkTomato> arma log files are huge
02:58 <Corn> omg i just looked up the armagetron facebook group and it has 214 hahaha
02:58 <luke-jr> Corn: yep
02:58 <luke-jr> Corn: this is the group that decided girls should not play Armagetron
02:58 <PinkTomato> I'm not there :)
02:58 <Corn> yeah you told me that
02:58 <Corn> more girls play then i though... they probably all suck though
02:59 <Corn> thought&
02:59 <Corn> *
02:59 <Corn> its still fucking hilarious though
03:00 <Corn> Discussion Board > Girls should not play armegetron!!!
03:00 <Corn> ah haha
03:02 <Corn> "There are many things said on armegetron that are completely disgusting, there r also many mean and harsh things said, most boys no this is all a joke, but some girls think we are serious..."
03:02 <PinkTomato> learn to spell
03:02 <PinkTomato> that person should
03:03 <smoothice> luke-jr: the thing is.. I can run this many arma servers on my own time:
03:03 <smoothice> &smoothservers
03:03 <smoothbot> smoothice: Dog Fight: Online --- Sumo: Online --- Capture the Flag Shooting: Offline --- Hold the Flag: Offline --- Styball: Offline

03:07 <luke-jr> :þ
03:07 <smoothice> luke-jr: lol
03:07 <luke-jr> 130 pings is like Europe players on my Connecticut server
03:08 <luke-jr> whereas closer players have got as low as 20-30
03:08 <smoothice> luke-jr: yeah.. I have pretty good pings to the Dallas center in the US
03:08 <smoothice> well
03:08 <smoothice> 60-70 is good for me...

03:17 <luke-jr> lol
03:17 <PinkTomato> about 9-11ms
03:18 <smoothice> wait.. you're saying 68 is low?

06:08 <Lucifer> an hour away from 2009 :/
06:11 <smoothice> two hours here :/
06:40 <Lucifer> hmmm, now I'm back to that question again
06:40 <Lucifer> do I write my own packet generator script that reads freeciv's packets.def and outputs my own code
06:40 <Lucifer> do I modify theirs to output my own code (in which case they've got all the parsing done for me)
06:40 <Lucifer> or
06:40 <Lucifer> do I hand-code all the packets myself?
06:41 * Lucifer is currently leaning towards writing his own from scratch
06:43 <Lucifer> hmm, an alternative is to use freeciv's unmodified, and give it my own headers that are unbuckled from freeciv source

07:54 <hang3r> Well the inbreeding failed and they all ate each other.
07:57 <luke-jr> …
08:22 <Lucifer> heh
08:22 <Lucifer> luke-jr: it's still in the works, really
08:22 <Lucifer> I started over in c++ with the intention of using freeciv as the game engine
08:22 <Lucifer> so where I'm at right now, it *can* connect to the server, but can't exchange any messages with it yet
08:23 <Lucifer> because I need to be able to create and interpret freeciv packets
08:24 <Lucifer> hence my earlier choice, which I haven't made yet
08:28 <Lucifer> the #eugenics channel has in the topic where to get the code from if you want to fool with it
08:34 <luke-jr> hm
08:34 <luke-jr> Lucifer: any idea why my speakers sound like crap these days?
08:34 <Lucifer> it's the music you listen to :)
08:35 <Lucifer> did you blow them?
08:36 <luke-jr> dunno?
08:36 <luke-jr> I can still hear
08:36 <luke-jr> it just sounds crappy
08:37 <luke-jr> like it's distorted, but it's not that loud
08:37 <luke-jr> both sides
08:38 <luke-jr> oh well ☹
08:38 <Lucifer> hmmm, that sounds like they're blown
08:38 <luke-jr> how to fix?
08:38 <Lucifer> that or you've changed something, like sound card, and it's outputting at too high of a level for the speakers to handle
08:39 <Lucifer> the fix to blown computer speakers is to buy new ones :)
08:39 <luke-jr> ☹
08:39 <Lucifer> are we talking little computer speakers, or big stereo speakers?
08:39 <luke-jr> there's a difference?
08:39 <Lucifer> well, yeah, heh
08:39 <luke-jr> there's 3 pieces
08:39 <Lucifer> computer speakers are little things that go on the desk, big stereo speakers are large and generally go on the floor, stand waistt high (or so)
08:40 <luke-jr> oh
08:40 <luke-jr> small
08:40 <Lucifer> yeah, get new ones then, sorry
08:40 <luke-jr> can't just resolder something?
08:40 <Lucifer> but it might be worth trying to determine if it really is the speakers
08:40 <luke-jr> :x
08:40 <Lucifer> blown speakers mean the cone itself is broken, usually split from the voice coil
08:40 <luke-jr> can't replace onboard sound card
08:41 <Lucifer> hence the distorted sound, the range of motion has decreased
08:41 <luke-jr> better be the speakers
08:41 <luke-jr> cone?
08:41 <Lucifer> you might crack them open and see if the cone has broken, and try masking tape
08:41 <Lucifer> yeah, there's a little paper cone in there that wiggles back and forth
08:41 <Lucifer> see, when a speaker blows, that means it's received a signal of higher amplitude than it's capable of tolerating
08:42 <Lucifer> so something in the mechanical part has to break, because the electrical part can usually tolerate it
08:42 <Lucifer> you'd rather have it that way than having the electrical part start a fire because you turned the volume up too loud :)
08:42 <Lucifer> the weakest mechanical part is the paper cone, particularly where it connects to the voice coil
08:43 <Lucifer> the voice coil is in the back, and it's basically just a magnet that translates the incoming electrical signal into mechanical motion
08:43 <luke-jr> I feel like an idiot for taking apart my alarm clock when I need to be up in 7 hrs
08:43 <Lucifer> er, put it back together and go to bed?
08:43 <Lucifer> speakers that sound like crap can still wake you up, right?
08:44 <luke-jr> yeah, but..
08:44 <luke-jr> gr
08:44 <luke-jr> stupid idiots glued the wire in place
08:46 <luke-jr> well, I see the speaker piece itself now
08:46 <luke-jr> no obvious physical damage
08:46 -!- Stewah [n=AngryOve@c-67-171-182-51.hsd1.or.comcast.net] has joined #armagetron
08:47 <Lucifer> probably outta put it back together then, but before you do, take a look around the inside of the case and make sure there aren't any holes or cracks that shouldn't be there
08:48 <Lucifer> and that any holes that should be there are clear of obstructions :)
08:48 <luke-jr> yep, everything looks good
08:49 <Lucifer> pay close attention to the seal between the speakker and the case when you put it back
08:49 <Lucifer> that's another place air could leak, and if it were leaking there before, you want to fix it
08:49 <Lucifer> if it were not leaking there before, you don't want to cause it to leak now
08:50 <Lucifer> the only other thing I know of that could cause it to distort is actual electrical distortion, but I don't have any idea how to make that ahppen with a computer
08:50 <Lucifer> er, what I mean is, if it were working before, and it doesn't work now, I don't have any idea what could have happened to cause that
08:51 <Lucifer> unless it's really a software problem
08:51 <Lucifer> do you have like an mp3 player or something you can plug the speakers into to see if they sound good using a different source than your computer?
08:51 <luke-jr> not really
08:51 <Lucifer> hmmm, if it's a software problem, you don't want to buy new speakers and see them suffer too
08:52 <luke-jr> I'm not sure if it's just started happening, or if I just started getting pissed at it
08:52 <Lucifer> ok, what I want is a script that reads packets.def and outputs serialize/unserialize functions and structs
08:53 <Lucifer> heh
08:53 <Lucifer> get into a local freecycling group and get some different speakers :)
08:53 <Lucifer> you're in/near a good sized city now, right?
08:54 <luke-jr> yeah
08:54 <Lucifer> http://www.freecycle.org <--- to see if there's such a group near you. It's free stuff!
08:56 <luke-jr> speakers builtin to monitor sounding like crap too
