00:01 <epsy> well, here :)
00:01 <ivantis> its 5 pm right now
00:01 <epsy> CEST
00:01 <ivantis> well, here
00:01 <ivantis> uh,
00:01 <ivantis> i dont know the timezone
00:01 <epsy> most of the UE
00:02 <epsy> are on CET
00:02 <ivantis> central time -1 hour
00:02 <epsy> on summer they are on CEST
00:02 <epsy> which is not CST
00:02 <epsy> :)
00:02 <ivantis> you mean DST?
00:02 <ct|kyle> CST -1 epsy
00:02 <ivantis> whatever
00:02 <epsy> it seems to be called summer time for european timezones
00:03 <epsy> while with american ones get called daylight savings time
00:03 <ivantis> is armabot back yet if its the 12th already?
00:03 <ct|kyle> we call that central time weather summer or winter
00:03 <ivantis> yeah, right, it doesnt save me any daylight
00:03 <ct|kyle> it gives me the daylight late in the night
00:03 <ivantis> i hate having to go to school earlier
00:04 <ivantis> because of it
00:04 <ivantis> ugh, i dont want to have to school this year
00:04 <ivantis> at all
00:05 <ivantis> 8th grade man, 8th grade!
00:05 <ct|kyle> heh
00:06 <ct|kyle> i hate daylight savings, i never had it till we got a stupid Governor
00:07 <ivantis> on servers, does MAX_IN_RATE and stuff help with player time-outs?
00:07 <ivantis> i looked at that thing on the wiki
00:09 <ct|kyle> donno setting not found in new servers
00:10 <ivantis> er, max_out_rate
00:11 <ct|kyle> no matches
00:12 <ivantis> say, does anyone know of a way to tell through ssh how much bandwidth you get?
00:12 <ivantis> im away from home right now
00:15 <StickyNoob> a bit yes
00:15 <ivantis> how?
00:15 <ivantis> i must know
00:16 <StickyNoob> oh oops
00:17 <ivantis> what?
00:17 <StickyNoob> wrong channel
00:22 <ivantis> stickynoob, how do i check speed through a command line?
00:23 <luke-jr> ivantis FAIL
00:23 <ivantis> what?
00:23 <epsy> nothing.
00:23 <ivantis> ???
00:23 <Monkey_arma> thats actually a really good question
00:24 <epsy> nah, he now exceeded his line quote for today, wait until tomorrow
00:24 <Monkey_arma> we have top for cpu usage
00:24 <Monkey_arma> but not so good stuff for net

00:25 <StickyNoob> ivantis: if you have root/sudo access you can install nethogs
00:25 <ivantis> whats that do?
00:25 <ivantis> i am root
00:25 <StickyNoob> Monkey_arma: nethogs is top for network access
00:25 <Monkey_arma> ah ok
00:25 <StickyNoob> ivantis: what type of system?
00:25 <Monkey_arma> is there some ntop or similar?
00:25 <ivantis> k ill try it
00:26 <luke-jr> StickyNoob: how about IO?
00:26 <StickyNoob> luke-jr: what, top for devices??
00:26 <luke-jr> or at least block devices
00:27 <StickyNoob> duno
00:27 <Monkey_arma> there is IOSTAT
00:27 <Monkey_arma> doubt it does much
00:27 <StickyNoob> dosent sound like something worth measuring
00:27 <Monkey_arma> i remember reading IO has the least support
00:27 <ivantis> ok, im installing nethogs
00:27 <ivantis> how does it work?
00:28 <Monkey_arma> ivantis are you root on irc or just you have a root window open?
00:28 <ivantis> i have a root window open. how on irc?
00:28 <StickyNoob> ivantis: just as root or sudo type "nethogs eth0"
00:29 <ivantis> i get...
00:29 <madmax> root on irc = being the ircd itself? :-P
00:29 <StickyNoob> no hes on irc through a web interface
00:29 <ivantis> http://mibbit.com/pb/2y5NIh
00:30 <ivantis> using ssh'ed irc is too slow
00:30 <ivantis> and i cant download anything now
00:30 <Monkey_arma> what i mean is ....is he on the net as root
00:30 <Monkey_arma> and you knew that :)
00:31 <ivantis> did you guys look at http://mibbit.com/pb/2y5NIh ? thats what i get from "nethogs eth0"
00:31 <StickyNoob> that looks ok
00:31 <ivantis> what does it tell me through that?
00:31 <ivantis> whats my speed?
00:32 <StickyNoob> ahh right
00:32 <StickyNoob> that tells you howmuch bandwidth each program is using
00:32 <StickyNoob> so lshd is using 0.065kb a second
00:32 <ivantis> no i meant total that i get, my internet speed
00:33 <StickyNoob> no real way to do that
00:33 <ivantis> dangit
00:33 <ivantis> well, i could do it with vnc
00:33 <StickyNoob> other than look at the contract you signed
00:33 <ivantis> but that is hellishly slow
00:33 <StickyNoob> whatare you doing??
00:33 <ivantis> what?
00:33 <StickyNoob> what are you doing??
00:34 <StickyNoob> that you think is slow
00:34 <ivantis> using vnc
00:34 <StickyNoob> heh
00:34 <ivantis> btw, what port does X server run on?
00:34 <ivantis> not |x| servers, x windows server
00:34 <ivantis> lol
00:35 <StickyNoob> dont think it runs on a network port, dose it
00:35 <ivantis> then how does it tunnel?
00:35 <StickyNoob> ahh you mean x forwarding?
00:35 <ivantis> ya
00:35 <StickyNoob> x forwarding is the slowst thing known to man
00:35 <ivantis> i know

00:36 <ivantis> it doesnt matter, i must use it
00:36 <StickyNoob> why?
00:36 <ivantis> important, and private matter
00:36 <StickyNoob> well all i can say is that unless you are on the same lan x forwarding is fairly bad
00:36 <ivantis> i need to use a remote browser to look at my net speed
00:36 <ivantis> what port???
00:37 <StickyNoob> it goes over the ssh session
00:37 <Monkey_arma> sticky isnt there some new thing to replace lbxproxy?
00:37 <StickyNoob> yes im trying to remember the new compressed x forwarding thing
00:38 <ivantis> yeah, but im using a ssh client that has a tunnels menu, and it asks for a port
00:38 <StickyNoob> you are not tunneling
00:38 <Monkey_arma> one word of note is that work on x server and accessories to it is happening very fast
00:38 <ivantis> go to http://www.netspace.org/ssh/
00:38 <ivantis> look at the menu
00:39 <StickyNoob> are you running windows or linux?

00:58 <ivantis> MAX_OUT_RATE is 3
00:58 <Monkey_arma> ivantis ssh can fuck with your bandwidth big time
00:58 <Monkey_arma> as sticky said, best to change the port you have it on
00:58 <ivantis> i know, i left some room for it
00:58 <StickyNoob> noooooo shooting
00:58 <ivantis> why change the port?
00:59 <Monkey_arma> then you wont get loads of login attempts from iran and china
00:59 <ivantis> noooo shooting? what?
00:59 <ivantis> ah
00:59 <Monkey_arma> also he recommended fail2ban
00:59 <ivantis> should i change my dns name?
00:59 <ivantis> right now its ivantis.1.vg
01:00 <StickyNoob> ivantis: i get 200-300ms ping
01:00 <ivantis> hmm
01:00 <ivantis> it wasn't like that before
01:00 <StickyNoob> i am in europe
01:00 <ivantis> yeah, even in europe
01:00 <ivantis> hang on
01:00 <Monkey_arma> with ssh my ping was 30-120 ms more than usual
01:01 <ivantis> where?
01:01 <Monkey_arma> but that was with constant attempts
01:01 <Monkey_arma> fort cafe
01:01 <ivantis> oh

01:07 <ivantis> **plz**
01:08 <Monkey_arma> well, ivantis when we tested some servers with fort settings, the newer ones seriously solved a lag issue that was in 2.8.2.1
01:08 <Monkey_arma> i dont know from which version the issues were resolved but the difference was noticable
01:08 <ivantis> the issue was in 2.8.2.1, or it was solved in 2.8.2.1??
01:09 <Monkey_arma> the issue was in 2.8.2.1
01:09 <Monkey_arma> when you keep turning fast you get warping of lines
01:09 <ivantis> 2.8_alpha isnt 2.8.2.1, is it?
01:09 <Monkey_arma> it didnt happen or much less at least in later versions
01:09 <Monkey_arma> 2.8 alpha is later than 2.8.2.1
01:09 <StickyNoob> 210

01:10 <ivantis> that better than before?
01:10 <StickyNoob> bout same
01:10 <ivantis> i put the max_out_rate to 5
01:10 <ivantis> hm
01:10 <ivantis> try it now, i was in ssh
01:10 <StickyNoob> lag is not massively related to bandwidth
01:11 -!- Flex [i=savas@unaffiliated/savas] has joined #armagetron
01:11 <Monkey_arma> when we say lag there are 2 things we can mean
01:11 <ivantis> slow, and ping, yeah
01:12 <Monkey_arma> the main one we talk about is inconsistency lag
01:12 <Monkey_arma> where you warp lines or whatever
01:12 <epsy> there's player sliding..but that's rare
01:12 <Monkey_arma> or jump etc
01:12 <epsy> jumps are quite common, but in sumo
01:12 <Monkey_arma> i mean as opposed to consistent lag
01:12 <Monkey_arma> like ping, fps etc
01:12 <StickyNoob> 230-300
01:12 <epsy> oh, that looser thingy?
01:13 <ivantis> you have 230-300 ping now?
01:13 <ivantis> goodness
01:13 <StickyNoob> yes
01:14 <ivantis> hmm
01:14 <epsy> i don't really get the jumping thingy
01:14 <ivantis> that is an issue
01:14 <Monkey_arma> epsy what u mean?
01:14 <epsy> when you have your enemy warping from one side of the zone to the other
01:15 <epsy> enemy = anyone but you
01:15 <StickyNoob> epsy: where is the code for the most recent non screwed up glancing client?
01:15 <Monkey_arma> oO
01:15 <Monkey_arma> heh
01:15 <epsy> what?
01:15 <Monkey_arma> that would be latest 2.8alpha
01:15 <ivantis> d
01:15 <StickyNoob> is that svn tagged?
01:15 <ivantis> maybe i should change it again
01:16 <epsy> if i knew how it did happen i think i would have an idea of what to wrok around
01:17 <ivantis> yipes, 5/8 on my server, they are in for a world of lag
01:18 <epsy> in x sumo it's not only with transatlantical players
01:18 <ivantis> maybe that is a good setting, though, and they wont have that much
01:19 <epsy> but it seems that it lags more when certain (cough) players start playing
01:19 <ivantis> like that Bob guy from china
01:19 <ivantis> he always has about 650 ping
01:20 <epsy> so there's two players from china
01:20 <ivantis> whats the ping like at shooting from the list?
01:21 <ivantis> going from colorado to kansas, 117 average

is a site that has tools, maps, and other various items. It orignally only existed as a server control panel, but I slowly began adding stuff such as a homepage and tools.
----
This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
