00:00 <Flex_> i dunno about hostmarks but IP should be possible
00:00 <epsy> yeah i seen
00:01 <epsy> bah
00:01 <epsy> i just have to hope phpBB logs IPs
00:01 <Flex_> it does
00:01 <epsy> i mean phpBB 2.0
00:01 <epsy> or 2.whatever
00:02 <Flex_> yeah it does, why don't you just make it so your shoutbox can't be used by guests..
00:02 <Flex_> that simply avoids imposters all together
00:02 <epsy> well, i'm not a grerate phpBB fan
00:02 <Flex_> this for turbo?
00:03 <epsy> no, tronic donkeys
00:03 <Flex_> oh, can i see? :)
00:03 <epsy> http://epsy.is-a-geek.org:4539/~epsy/tronicdonkeys/
00:03 <epsy> err this might be slow, that's actually just on my comp
00:04 <Flex_> nice, just don't you think the logo is abit too tall? :P

09:25 <luke-jr> 55 MB
09:25 <luke-jr> but if you already have a recent LiveCD, like an Ubuntu disc, that can work too ☺
09:27 * luke-jr pokes MrBougo
09:27 <luke-jr> he's in shock?
09:27 <luke-jr> or just doing some homework?
09:27 <MrBougo> or both
09:27 <MrBougo> nah im reading docs
09:28 <MrBougo> about the vostro and ubuntu
09:28 -!- DStar [n=fn-javac@84-74-43-193.dclient.hispeed.ch] has joined #armagetron
09:28 <MrBougo> and it's less complicated than compiling arma
09:28 <MrBougo> oh wait that was a bad example
09:28 <luke-jr> lol
09:28 <MrBougo> j/k
09:28 <MrBougo> except on windows
09:28 <MrBougo> i once wanted to try
09:28 <luke-jr> HAHAHA
09:28 <MrBougo> i needed libs and libs and libs
09:29 <luke-jr> building Arma on Windows has to be a nightmare
09:29 <MrBougo> IT IS
09:29 <MrBougo> LIBS EVERYWHERE
09:29 <luke-jr> well, you have the libs thing on most Linux-based OS too
09:29 <MrBougo> i know
09:29 <MrBougo> linux rocks for dev
09:29 <luke-jr> err
09:29 <MrBougo> not only for dev
09:29 <luke-jr> what I'm saying is
09:29 <luke-jr> on ubuntu
09:29 <luke-jr> you'd need to get libs, and lib, and libs
09:29 <luke-jr> just like Windows
09:29 <MrBougo> i dont want to compile arma
09:29 <luke-jr> :p
09:30 <MrBougo> so what, i should use slackware as my first linux experience?
09:30 <luke-jr> no
09:30 <luke-jr> Gentoo
09:30 <MrBougo> :p
09:30 <DStar> indeed
09:30 <luke-jr> Gentoo is great for beginners
09:30 <epsy> LOL!
09:30 <DStar> gentoo is great for everyone
09:30 <MrBougo> except me
09:30 <luke-jr> even if you move on to something else later
09:30 <MrBougo> ok luke, i'll try gentoo
09:30 <luke-jr> MrBougo: k, IM me if you have any questions
09:31 <luke-jr> if you use your Ubuntu LiveCD, I presume you have IM and IRC available if you need them
09:31 <luke-jr> so that's probably the best way to install
09:31 <luke-jr> like spidey did
09:31 <MrBougo> i have a desktop computer too heh
09:31 <luke-jr> o
09:31 <MrBougo> i wont shut it down :p
09:31 <luke-jr> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1
09:31 <luke-jr> that's the manual
09:32 <MrBougo> amd64?
09:32 <luke-jr> replace w/ x86 if yours is old
09:32 <luke-jr> Core 2 Duo would do amd64 tho
09:32 <MrBougo> old?
09:32 <MrBougo> wtf old
09:32 <MrBougo> lol
09:32 <luke-jr> lol
09:32 <MrBougo> oh nvm
09:32 <MrBougo> it's old
09:32 <luke-jr> my 3 year old system is amd64
09:32 <MrBougo> pentium 4 yuck
09:32 <luke-jr> EWW
09:33 <MrBougo> i think this one is 5-old
09:33 <DStar> ow xD
09:33 <MrBougo> THAT HURT
09:33 <luke-jr> amd64 might work, but DONT TRY IT
09:33 <MrBougo> err
09:33 <luke-jr> Pentium 4 ran 64-bit SLOW
09:33 <DStar> really?
09:33 <DStar> omfg...
09:33 <MrBougo> wait, im not talking about installing gentoo on my desktop pc
09:33 <MrBougo> my laptop will have a cor 2 duo, is it AMD64 too?
09:33 <MrBougo> i mean
09:33 <MrBougo> i know it isnt AMD
09:34 <DStar> but it's the same arch as an amd64
09:34 <MrBougo> The Core 2 brand refers to a range of Intel's consumer dual-core and quad-core (2x2) 64-bit x86-64 CPUs based on the Intel Core microarchitecture, which derived from the 32-bit dual-core Yonah laptop processor.
09:34 <MrBougo> mh
09:34 <MrBougo> seems to be x86
09:35 <luke-jr> Core2Duo should be fine for 64-bit
09:35 <DStar> core 2 is amd64
09:35 <MrBougo> how did spidey install his gentoo, luke-jr ?
09:35 <luke-jr> MrBougo: Ubuntu LiveCD
09:35 <MrBougo> wikipedia says that its x86
09:35 <MrBougo> so you can install gentoo from a ub livecd?
09:36 -!- DarkStar [n=darkstar@84-74-43-193.dclient.hispeed.ch] has joined #armagetron
09:36 -!- DStar [n=fn-javac@84-74-43-193.dclient.hispeed.ch] has left #armagetron []
09:36 <MrBougo> oh, i spelled "lovecd" on google
09:36 -!- DarkStar is now known as DStar
09:37 <DStar> lol xD
09:37 <luke-jr> MrBougo: yes
09:37 <luke-jr> tho
09:37 <MrBougo> how do you do that
09:37 <luke-jr> amd64 Gentoo requires amd64 LiveCD too
09:37 <MrBougo> hehe
09:38 <DStar> or at least the kernel has to be amd64
09:38 <MrBougo> i have a kubuntu x86 livecd
09:38 <luke-jr> MrBougo: open a console and do the install
09:38 <luke-jr> ☺
09:38 <MrBougo> oh, thank you for your help, luke
09:38 <luke-jr> DStar: true
09:38 <luke-jr> MrBougo: did you rtfm? :P
09:38 <MrBougo> tfmygtm?
09:38 <luke-jr> ???
09:38 <MrBougo> it doesnt talk about isntalling from another livecd
09:39 <luke-jr> o
09:39 <DStar> because there is no actual difference
09:39 <luke-jr> DStar: yes there is
09:39 <luke-jr> 1 minor thing
09:39 <DStar> oh?
09:39 <luke-jr> you need to skip steps 1-3 :p
09:39 <DStar> /mnt/gentoo not exist?
09:39 <luke-jr> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#book_part1_chap4
09:40 <luke-jr> that too, but mkdir is easy
09:40 <DStar> and it doesn't have to be /mnt/gentoo
09:40 <luke-jr> no
09:40 <luke-jr> I usually use /mnt/g
09:40 <DStar> i use whatever is there
09:40 <DStar> on the install that i'm currently doing it's /mnt/gentoo
09:40 <luke-jr> I don't really follow the manual strictly :p
09:40 <luke-jr> mount -t proc{,,} <-- fun
09:41 <DStar> what does the {,,} do?
09:41 <luke-jr> here's a hint:
09:41 <luke-jr> mv file{1,2,3,4} dir
09:41 <luke-jr> expands to:
09:41 <luke-jr> mv file1 file2 file3 file4 dir
09:41 <DStar> ah
09:41 <DStar> :D
09:42 <luke-jr> MrBougo: you should follow the manual strictly tho :p
09:42 <DStar> gotta see if my ultra 10 is all right
09:42 <luke-jr> wtf?
09:42 <luke-jr> speaking of which, I have 2 MIPS servers to mess with someitme
09:42 <DStar> i have 2 ultra 10s :P
09:42 <luke-jr> what arch?
09:42 <DStar> ultrasparc
09:43 <luke-jr> o
09:43 <DStar> http://dstar.ch/phpsysinfo
09:43 <luke-jr> trade you a MIPS for one
09:43 <luke-jr> I live diverse archs
09:43 <DStar> this is one of them
09:43 <DStar> and the other one is on bootstrap.sh atm
09:44 <luke-jr> heh
09:44 <luke-jr> I don't know how to install on my MIPS ones yet
09:44 <luke-jr> wait
09:44 <luke-jr> does SPARC still use stage1??
09:44 <DStar> i am doing a stage 1
09:44 <luke-jr> most Gentoo doesn't support stage1 anymore..
09:45 <DStar> i just do it anyway
09:45 <DStar> :P
09:45 <luke-jr> ...
09:45 <luke-jr> pointless
09:45 <luke-jr> hm
09:45 <luke-jr> I think I didn't shake the milk good enough ☹
09:45 <DStar> how off-topic xD
09:45 <DStar> but speaking of which... brb
09:46 <luke-jr> I'm not used to weird texture
09:46 <luke-jr> or whatever it is floating on top
09:46 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: wb
09:48 <DStar> i've got the feeling that something is wrong with the ultra 10
09:48 <DStar> again
09:48 <DStar> (the one i'm currently installing)
09:48 <DStar> can't ping it nomore :S
09:48 <MrBougo> mh
09:48 <luke-jr> :o
09:49 <DStar> that's the 3rd time this happens
09:49 <DStar> and it'd always happen while there is sorta heavy load
09:49 <DStar> guess it's dead :/
09:49 <luke-jr> that's one thing for sure
09:50 <luke-jr> Gentoo does tell you when the hardware's dead
09:50 <DStar> well maybe it says something on the screen
09:50 <luke-jr> MIPS don't have screens
09:50 <DStar> well... my ultra 10 has a monitor and a keyboard hooked up
09:50 <DStar> but it's in another room
09:50 <luke-jr> :p
09:50 <DStar> brb
09:50 <luke-jr> if it worked, I'd trade

10:06 <luke-jr> DStar: ...
10:06 <wrtlprnft> yep
10:06 <luke-jr> Intel > *
10:06 <Bougo> wrtlprnft: and nvidia doest support 3D acceleration on linux?
10:06 <DStar> of course they do
10:06 <wrtlprnft> it does with a binary driver
10:06 <luke-jr> Bougo: that's not what I said
10:06 -!- MrBougo [i=MrBougo@73.230-242-81.adsl-dyn.isp.belgacom.be] has quit [Nick collision from services.]
10:06 <luke-jr> I said Linux doesn't support 3D acceleration for nVidia
10:06 -!- Bougo is now known as MrBougo
10:07 <MrBougo> :/
10:07 <MrBougo> yea sorry
10:07 <MrBougo> thats what i meant
10:07 <MrBougo> so it does with a bin driver
10:07 <MrBougo> ew
10:07 <MrBougo> so whats the problem luke
10:07 <luke-jr> if you use nVidia's stuff, you end up with an illegal pseudo-Linux that most people won't support
10:07 <MrBougo> :(
10:07 <wrtlprnft> well, if the opensource amd driver comes along the next card i'll buy will have an AMD graphics card
10:08 <DStar> illegal?
10:08 <MrBougo> yea, how is it illegal
10:08 <wrtlprnft> *the next computer
10:08 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: the open source ATi driver already works nicely, tho not as good as Intel's
10:08 <MrBougo> anything installing on linux should be open source?
10:08 <luke-jr> MrBougo: same way downloading most movies is illegal
10:08 <MrBougo> huh
10:08 <luke-jr> Linux is copyrighted
10:08 * wrtlprnft uses opera and is happy with it
10:08 <MrBougo> so it's copyrighted
10:08 <MrBougo> oh
10:08 <MrBougo> but im downloading linux
10:08 <MrBougo> then installing stuff on it
10:09 <MrBougo> that's the purpose of an OS, isnt it?
10:09 <luke-jr> MrBougo: you are granted permission to distribute and derive from Linux under certain conditions
10:09 <luke-jr> nVidia violates those conditions
10:09 <MrBougo> and if i derive for personal use?
10:09 <luke-jr> same conditions apply
10:09 <MrBougo> heh
10:09 <MrBougo> and how is it derived
10:09 <luke-jr> but "personal use" generally doesn't involve distribution
10:09 <luke-jr> which is all the restrictions are
10:10 <luke-jr> MrBougo: Linux isn't a microkernel, it's monolithic
10:10 <MrBougo> is it a driver or a patch?
10:10 <luke-jr> all hardware support is part of a single whole program
10:10 <luke-jr> eg, there are no real drivers
10:10 <wrtlprnft> it's not totally accepted that nvidia's driver is illegal
10:10 <luke-jr> "drivers" for Linux are patches
10:10 <wrtlprnft> infact linus thinks it's not IIRC
10:10 <MrBougo> bah, i'll be illegal, full stop
10:10 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: it is by all IP lawyers and most kernel developers
10:10 <MrBougo> i'll blame nvidia
10:10 <luke-jr> MrBougo: nVidia is liable anyway
10:10 <luke-jr> they uploaded it to you
10:10 <MrBougo> yup
10:10 <wrtlprnft> as long as you have a GPL'd module that just uses an external prorietary binary
10:10 <luke-jr> but good luck if you need support ☺
10:10 <MrBougo> i'm a poor user
10:11 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: that's not legal
10:11 <MrBougo> hehe
10:11 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: GPL'd code cannot use an external blob
10:11 <MrBougo> huh
10:11 <wrtlprnft> sure it can
10:11 <DStar> wrtlprnft: it is not GPL'd
10:11 <MrBougo> haha
10:11 <DStar> only parts of it are
10:11 <wrtlprnft> otherwise you wouldn't be able to write GPL'd apps for windows
10:11 <DStar> or really.. only parts are open source
10:11 <luke-jr> DStar: it must be
10:11 <MrBougo> so theres the guy who says everybody's wrong
10:11 <DStar> and not GPL'd at all
10:12 <MrBougo> the two guys who have different visions of GPL
10:12 <MrBougo> and the noob
10:12 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: the GPL makes an exception for parts included with the OS, IIRC
10:12 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: otherwise you couldn't
10:12 * wrtlprnft never read about such an exception
10:13 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: Windows binaries for GPL'd apps are illegal most of the time anyway
10:13 <luke-jr> nobody bothers to enforce it, is all
10:13 <wrtlprnft> well, there's no point
10:13 <luke-jr> technically, on Windows the compiler is considered "source code" because it's not included with the OS
10:15 <wrtlprnft> anyways, with amd releasing their specs nvidia will at some point be forced to do so, too
10:15 <DStar> i still don't get why using an external module in the linux kernel should be wrong...
10:15 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: probably
10:15 <luke-jr> nVidia has an interesting history
10:15 <luke-jr> DStar: there is no such thing as an external module in the linux kernel
10:15 <luke-jr> Linux is monolithic
10:15 <luke-jr> it is a single program
10:15 <luke-jr> modules are just binary patches
10:16 <DStar> yeah and now tell me
10:16 <DStar> what is wrong with a module that is not compiled from the source of the kernel?
10:16 <luke-jr> what module is not?
10:16 <DStar> the nvidia kernel driver...
10:16 <luke-jr> nope
10:17 <luke-jr> it uses internal Linux symbols/code
10:17 <wrtlprnft> kernel modules can be written without modifying linux's source code
10:17 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: not without deriving from Linux's source code
10:17 <wrtlprnft> which makes them external enough for me
10:18 <luke-jr> there is a way nVidia could work around the GPL's restrictions
10:18 <wrtlprnft> if you write a GPL'd module that implements an API, some sort of standard
10:18 <luke-jr> but they don't do it
10:18 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: there is no such API
10:18 <luke-jr> the only APIs Linux has are for userspace
10:18 <wrtlprnft> everything can use that API without deriving from GPLd code
10:19 <luke-jr> ah, if you added such an API
10:19 <luke-jr> then yes
10:19 <luke-jr> that's the workaround
10:19 <luke-jr> but as of right now, there is no such piece
10:19 <wrtlprnft> i think nvidia is doing that
10:19 <luke-jr> and the Linux developers have stated they would reject it
10:19 <luke-jr> no
10:19 <luke-jr> there is no standard/API they use
10:19 <wrtlprnft> well, what does the opensource part of nvidia's driver do, then?
10:19 <luke-jr> and even if there was, they would need to distribute the binary .o and source code wrapper individually
10:20 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: it interfaces with interal Linux functions and internal nVidia functions
10:20 <luke-jr> if nVidia put an API in between, they'd have a way out
10:20 <luke-jr> like NDISWrapper
10:20 <luke-jr> but as-is, the current nVidia drivers are illegal
10:20 <wrtlprnft> oh, NDISWrapper is legal, then?
10:21 <luke-jr> NDISwrapper itself is legal
10:21 <wrtlprnft> anyways, /me doesn't care too much if it's legal. I just hope that the linux kernel developers aren't like the content industry
10:21 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: Linus already veto'd it
10:21 <luke-jr> tho I wish he hadn't
10:22 <MrBougo> veto'd what?
10:22 <luke-jr> a patch added a warning of an impending disallow of loading non-GPL modules in 2008
10:22 <luke-jr> to make it technically harder to load illegal code
10:22 <wrtlprnft> which is stupid
10:22 <luke-jr> no
10:22 <DStar> i agree with wrtlprnft
10:23 <DStar> it is stupid
10:23 <wrtlprnft> just would mean that the vanilla kernel becomes useless
10:23 <luke-jr> no
10:23 <luke-jr> it means we can at least pretend the nVidia modules don't exist
10:23 <wrtlprnft> and i'd have to patch it all the time to remove that stupid restriction
10:23 <luke-jr> even if everyone is too chicken to sue
10:23 <luke-jr> better no code from nVidia than binary code
10:23 <wrtlprnft> not much better than DRM crap and nothing to do with freedom IMHO
10:24 <DStar> luke-jr: if everyone's too chicken to sue, why don't you?
10:24 <luke-jr> DStar: I don't own the relevant copyrights
10:24 * wrtlprnft wants to have the freedom to load whatever he wants into his kernel
10:24 * wrtlprnft thinks that's a Good Thing
10:24 <MrBougo> yup
10:24 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: and you can; but that doesn't mean upstream will make it easy
10:24 <MrBougo> agreed
10:25 <luke-jr> especially when your loading that crap makes it impossible for them to debug any problems you have
10:25 <wrtlprnft> luke-jr: well, anyone is free to distribute a patched kernel removing that restriction, as long as the patch is GPL'd
10:25 <luke-jr> maybe if people understood that and didn't go bugging developers for support, it'd be tolerable
10:25 <MrBougo> hehe wrtlprnft
10:25 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: yes
10:25 <MrBougo> so why would they do such a kernel
10:25 <MrBougo> a readme file is enough :(
10:26 <luke-jr> MrBougo: because people don't read readme
10:26 <wrtlprnft> luke-jr: so do you think any major distro would include an unpatched kernel?
10:26 <luke-jr> join #xorg and watch for people asking for help with nVidia's drivers
10:26 <MrBougo> but they are supposed to do
10:26 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: no clue, probably RedHat
10:26 <luke-jr> they removed MP3 support
10:26 <MrBougo> i've installed some nvidia driver
10:26 <MrBougo> i dont remember having any problem
10:26 <wrtlprnft> making it harder for people to use their product with their hardware?
10:26 <luke-jr> MrBougo: most people don't give it time w/o the blob
10:26 <wrtlprnft> MP3 is different x_X
10:27 <luke-jr> not really
10:27 <luke-jr> MP3 is political
10:27 <luke-jr> the only reason is to push Vorbis
10:27 <wrtlprnft> bs
10:27 <MrBougo> yea, we're talking about mp3s
10:27 <MrBougo> and next we're gonna talk about the music industry
10:27 <MrBougo> then about racism
10:28 <wrtlprnft> then about terrorism
10:28 <luke-jr> yeah
10:28 <wrtlprnft> then about evolution
10:28 <luke-jr> those stinkin Jews
10:28 <luke-jr> :p
10:28 <MrBougo> what about big bang
10:28 <luke-jr> not even evolutionists follow big bang anymore, do they?
10:28 <DStar> or about religious fanatics
10:28 <DStar> oh wait we already did that all the time
10:28 <MrBougo> damn, it works!
10:28 <luke-jr> DStar: fanatics are good
10:28 <MrBougo> we arent talking about kernels anymore!
10:29 <DStar> luke-jr: extremism and fanatism is NOT good...
10:29 <epsy> #quote add <luke-jr> fanatics are good

21:11 <spidey> i couldn't get the dtd to download if i put it anywhere else
21:11 <spidey> so putting it there worked for me
21:12 <wrtlprnft> the map file wants Your_mom/dtd/map-0.2.8.0_pig2.dtd
21:12 <wrtlprnft> it may work for you, but only because you already downloaded that file from somewhere

21:12 <spidey> ok so i need to add a 2 at the end of pig?
21:12 <wrtlprnft> right now it will block out clients that haven't been on a CTF server before
21:13 <spidey> fixed i think
21:13 <wrtlprnft> it should work now
21:14 <spidey> you any good with hardware? :p
21:14 <noob13> i can't enter my server :P
21:15 <spidey> y?
21:15 <noob13> with the new map_file and resource_repository_server....
21:15 <noob13> i dont know
21:15 <spidey> try it again, i just fixed it

21:16 <wrtlprnft> not at all, sorry
21:16 <spidey> :(
21:16 * wrtlprnft hates installing RAM
21:17 <wrtlprnft> or trying to figure out which kind of RAM to get
21:17 <spidey> installing it is easy if the box isn't small
21:17 <spidey> figuring out if it's compatible is differne =/
21:17 <spidey> different*
21:19 <wrtlprnft> that site's even got a link to mine o_O
21:19 <spidey> wrtlprnft: doesn't opera dow rows of tabs. if it's to long for the browser?
21:19 <spidey> mine isn't doing it =/
21:20 <spidey> they just keep getting smaller xD
21:20 <wrtlprnft> dow?
21:20 <wrtlprnft> anyways, right click→customize
21:20 <wrtlprnft> then change “wrapping” to whatever you like
21:21 <wrtlprnft> you can't say how many rows you want, though :(
21:21 <spidey> hrm
21:21 <spidey> do i have to restart it?

23:32 <Gursikh> Is there a way to dump all current running settings to a file?
23:37 <Lucifer_arma> nope
23:38 <Gursikh> or to output them on consoel so I can grab them?
23:38 <Gursikh> been playing with setting in console and I think I got them how I want them
23:39 <Lucifer_arma> I don't think there's a way to output them as a group
23:40 <Lucifer_arma> with a script setup properly, you could determine your settings by induction
23:40 <Gursikh> awww
23:40 <Lucifer_arma> another way is to take a client configured with only default settings, join the server, and take a screenie of the red setting text as you join
23:40 <Lucifer_arma> there's a reason I always suggest making sure your changes get put in everytime.cfg while you're experimenting :)
23:41 <Lucifer_arma> or to instead put INCLUDE settings_custom.cfg into everytime.cfg
23:41 <Gursikh> lame :-( , and lack of tab-complete is somehow also very annoying
23:41 <Lucifer_arma> just press enter instead
23:41 <Lucifer_arma> you'll get a list of choices

This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
