06:16 <kamp> losing to unc...
06:16 <mkzelda> yea
06:16 <mkzelda> but thats the rivalry
06:16 <kamp> i'd be pissed if the gators lost to UNC
06:16 <mkzelda> of course they'd play big for that
06:16 <kamp> true true
06:17 <kamp> that should always be the coach's priority
06:17 <kamp> because it keeps the most people happy
06:17 <kamp> win the rivalries, then win the conference
06:17 <kamp> i could care less what the gators do if they just beat uga, fsu, and tennessee
06:17 <kamp> :)
06:18 <kamp> and now s. carolina, and as long as spurrier's there
06:18 <kamp> siugh
06:18 <kamp> i can't wait till football season starts again
06:18 <mkzelda> as far as basketball this year, we just beat vt
06:18 <kamp> niice
06:18 <kamp> they're pretty hot this year
06:19 <mkzelda> yea, #1 in conference
06:19 <kamp> beat down duke, right?
06:19 <mkzelda> yea
06:19 <mkzelda> we beat them 70-59
06:19 <mkzelda> didnt even look like a game
06:19 <kamp> that's more than enough to build an ncaa resume around
06:19 <kamp> lol
06:19 <mkzelda> heh, but we're 2-5 in conference
06:19 <mkzelda> counting that
06:20 <kamp> well
06:20 <kamp> beat unc
06:20 <kamp> and you're in
06:20 <mkzelda> 2 of our starting 5 have been out for a month
06:20 <kamp> ouch
06:21 <kamp> we've been pretty lucky this season
06:21 <kamp> some sicknesses, but no injuries
06:21 <mkzelda> I won my ncaa pool last year, picking gators to win
06:22 <kamp> nice job
06:22 <kamp> so you guys are playing coachless?
06:22 <kamp> in basketball?
06:22 <mkzelda> good question, i just realized i dont know who we have
06:22 <mkzelda> im sure we have someone
06:22 <kamp> lol
06:22 <kamp> probably an assistant
06:22 <mkzelda> sidney lowe
06:23 <kamp> sounds sort of familiar
06:23 <mkzelda> he played for ncsu
06:23 <mkzelda> under jimmy valvano
06:23 <kamp> pff
06:23 <kamp> i wouldn't remember that
06:23 <mkzelda> when ncsu won the ncaa
06:23 <kamp> neat
06:23 <kamp> well if he turns out to be a good coach...
06:23 <mkzelda> ya, thats been ncsu's trend in coaches lately, pick alumni
06:24 <kamp> he can pretty much count himself as a wolfpack great
06:24 <kamp> nice, UF won by ten
06:24 <kamp> i had a test :/ didn't get to go
06:25 <mkzelda> i had an academic scholarship to miami, honors program, didnt accept
06:25 <mkzelda> ive always wondered how that would have been
06:25 <kamp> miami
06:25 <kamp> ew
06:25 <kamp> i mean
06:25 <kamp> the city is cool
06:25 <kamp> the university...
06:25 <mkzelda> ya, especially when ive always been a gators fan
06:26 <kamp> it's a damn shame you couldn't come to UF though
06:26 <mkzelda> i prolly woulda run into some bad crowds
06:26 <kamp> were you a Florida resident?
06:26 <mkzelda> not in high school
06:26 <kamp> ah there you go
06:26 <kamp> bright futures wouldn't help and neither would lower tuition
06:26 <kamp> sucks, i get paid to come to UF
06:27 <kamp> which is nice, for things like season tickets :)
06:27 <kamp> been to any games?
06:27 <mkzelda> @UF?
06:27 <kamp> yea
06:27 <mkzelda> Just football, and all before 2000
06:28 <kamp> good times before 2000
06:28 <mkzelda> ya fl teams were crazy
06:29 <mkzelda> im near Tennessee so its always good when fl beats tn
06:29 <mkzelda> and lotsa relocated LSU fans here too
06:31 <kamp> heh
06:31 <kamp> i guess it's nice to gloat a bit
06:31 <kamp> i'd rather be here though
06:32 <kamp> at least, that's how i rationalized not taking out a loan to get to go to arizona this year
06:32 <mkzelda> u do research?
06:33 <mkzelda> outside funded?
06:33 <kamp> ?
06:33 <kamp> i'm a student
06:33 <mkzelda> i was trying to figure out how you get paid to go there
06:33 <kamp> scholarships
06:33 <mkzelda> i know people who've pulled that off, most do some sort of research
06:33 <kamp> nope
06:33 <kamp> i've got college prepaid
06:33 <mkzelda> gov funded or private company
06:33 <kamp> and bright futures
06:33 <kamp> basically tuition x2
06:34 <mkzelda> so bright you have to wear shades eh?
06:34 <kamp> something like that :P
06:35 <kamp> i'm a freshman now, so i'm just figuring out even that's not enough all alone
06:35 <mkzelda> cool, im trying to pay the $5,000 i still owe cause I cant defer my loans anymore but i cant get a job :/
06:35 <kamp> ouch
06:35 <kamp> that sucks
06:35 <mkzelda> at least, i cant get one that pays enough to pay that back
06:35 <kamp> yea
06:35 <kamp> i mean
06:36 <mkzelda> "We selected a more qualified applicant."
06:36 <kamp> there's construction :)
06:36 <kamp> wow that really sucks
06:36 <mkzelda> i finished in may
06:36 <kamp> i can definitely wait before i go into the world of that
06:36 <kamp> did you do any internships?
06:37 <mkzelda> no
06:37 <kamp> damn man
06:37 <kamp> that's a problem
06:37 <kamp> those are practically the key to the mansion
06:37 <kamp> at least that's what i keep getting told
06:37 <kamp> anyway, that does matter now
06:37 <kamp> what's your degree?
06:37 <mkzelda> yea ncsu was not full of good advice
06:37 <mkzelda> Networking Technologies
06:37 <mkzelda> ironic eh?
06:38 <kamp> why?
06:38 <mkzelda> cause its lacking the networking
06:38 <mkzelda> or i am
06:38 <kamp> ah
06:38 <kamp> gotcha
06:38 <kamp> heh
06:39 <kamp> ok now that i've got it, it's pretty clever and funny
06:39 <mkzelda> the common problem of cant get a job cause i dont have experience
06:39 <mkzelda> and entry level networking jobs dont really exist
06:39 <kamp> yea
06:39 <kamp> pretty tough
06:39 <kamp> i'm trying to remedy that one asap
06:40 <mkzelda> i got tired of waiting, started my own company to legitimize my freelance work
06:40 <kamp> good idea
06:40 <mkzelda> now i have experience :D
06:40 <kamp> lol
06:40 <mkzelda> and i can claim to have been doing this however long i want
06:41 <kamp> true
06:41 <kamp> wouldn't push it too far
06:41 <kamp> but true
06:41 <mkzelda> ya
06:42 <kamp> "i knew i was going to be in IT when i was three, so i started my company around then" ;)
06:42 <mkzelda> well i have been doing webhosting, webdesign for friends and a few companies since high schools, it just wasnt steady work
06:42 <kamp> sounds about right
06:42 <kamp> yea
06:42 <kamp> you should go back to the high schools
06:42 <kamp> see if anyone remembers you
06:43 <kamp> and if there's an it job there
06:43 <kamp> or the companies
06:43 <kamp> i mean
06:43 <DrJoeTron> YEAH
06:43 <DrJoeTron> HIGH SCHOOL
06:43 <kamp> joe
06:43 <DrJoeTron> CLASS OF 80 RULEZ!
06:43 <mkzelda> google is opening a new plant nearby, im hopin to try there
06:43 <kamp> go back to chicago
06:43 <DrJoeTron> I am :/
06:43 <kamp> go back somewhere else then
06:43 <kamp> :P
06:43 <DrJoeTron> I can't stand the blueline right now
06:43 <kamp> google needs plants?
06:43 <kamp> blueline?
06:44 <DrJoeTron> the loop
06:44 <DrJoeTron> cta
06:44 <mkzelda> 155 acre, $600 million server farm
06:44 <kamp> ah, server farm
06:44 <mkzelda> they just made it official a week ago
06:44 <kamp> making google services snappier than ever
06:44 <kamp> yea man, that's a very good idea
06:44 <kamp> wish i could apply :) but that's right up their alley
06:45 <mkzelda> eh?
06:46 <kamp> networking tech, web design, all that
06:46 <kamp> google google google
06:46 <mkzelda> i love google's services, but google's user policies scare me
06:47 <mkzelda> but when it comes to paying bills and living comfortably, ill sell out
06:47 <kamp> well
06:47 <kamp> i've decided not to mind their weirdness
06:47 <kamp> and just appreciate the very nice product
06:47 <mkzelda> yea
06:47 <mkzelda> im quite fond of their new hosting services
06:47 <mkzelda> gmail@yourdomain
06:47 <mkzelda> w/ google chat and calendar
06:47 <kamp> ?hosting services?
06:48 <kamp> i'm really fond of gmail and calendar
06:48 <mkzelda> ya, u can use gmail on your own domain, instead of another mail daemon
06:48 <kamp> never liked gtalk too much
06:48 <kamp> oh oh
06:48 <kamp> ok makes sense
06:48 <mkzelda> its in beta
06:48 <kamp> i thougt they were giving away space to make a page too
06:48 <mkzelda> one nice feature, u can automatically have all accounts on each other's contact lists
06:49 <mkzelda> yea, u can make pages too
06:49 <mkzelda> has templates and such
06:49 <kamp> very slick
06:49 <mkzelda> i dont use that feature
06:49 <kamp> anyway
06:49 <mkzelda> cause im much more comfortable w/ various cms's
06:49 <kamp> cms?
06:49 <mkzelda> and usually want multiple parties invovlements
06:49 <mkzelda> content management systems
06:49 <kamp> ah
06:49 <mkzelda> like blogger, wordpress, mambo, joomla, drupal
06:50 <kamp> oh oh
06:50 <kamp> ok
06:50 <kamp> i was about to ask for an example
06:50 <kamp> but ok, i get what you're talking about now
06:50 <kamp> i'm hoping to put up a website in a year or two
06:50 <kamp> first a new computer
06:50 <kamp> then a website
06:50 <kamp> money's a bitch
06:51 <kamp> anyway man, i'm going to go to sleep
06:51 <mkzelda> basically i've been providing webhosting/webdesign while training companies to use the cms i establish for them, i get paid for the training hours but then they are able to take over and make their own content
06:51 <kamp> i've got another long day ahead of me tomorrow
06:51 <mkzelda> that saves them money, cause they can pay someone min wage for data entry
06:51 <mkzelda> and i just get recurring monthly payments for hosting
06:51 <mkzelda> :)
06:51 <mkzelda> minimal work
06:51 <kamp> that's not too bad, no
06:51 <kamp> i mean, the training must be pretty tough
06:51 <kamp> do you offer support too?
06:51 <mkzelda> ya
06:51 <kamp> slick
06:52 <kamp> that's a good plan
06:52 <mkzelda> i have a basic hourly rate, so they arrange their questions in advance and call me when they need something, i have a 'teach a man to fish' sort of policy
06:52 <kamp> heh
06:52 <kamp> you'd probably make more with the "give a man a fish" policy
06:53 <mkzelda> prolly, but i dont like people dependant on me
06:53 <kamp> but on the other hand, with the first one, you can have more customers at once
06:53 <mkzelda> yea
06:53 <mkzelda> thats what i aim for
06:53 <kamp> that sounds really good, man
06:53 <kamp> i could probably do that through college :)
06:53 <mkzelda> i wish i had though tto do it while i was in college
06:54 <mkzelda> take advantage of the 100mbits
06:54 <mkzelda> well, i took advantage of them, but not for this
06:54 <kamp> on the other hand, there'd be aporblem with scheduling and classes
06:54 <kamp> as always in college
06:54 <mkzelda> yea
06:55 <mkzelda> man i guess i should call it a night
06:55 <kamp> likewise
06:55 <mkzelda> if u end up wanting some hosting, lemme know :D
06:55 <kamp> it's late as hell
06:55 <kamp> heh
06:55 <kamp> in a year
06:55 <mkzelda> ok
06:56 <kamp> in the meantime, i'll be seeing what you're doing :) get more ideas

15:54 <[dlh]> oh good, it failed.
15:54 <[dlh]> for some reason.

15:55 <Lucifer_arma> I think. I don't know, I didn't check the paths.. Heh
15:55 <[dlh]> arg, it did do 0.2.8
15:56 <[dlh]> why does it do that?
15:56 <[dlh]> now I have to go through a full rebuild because it screwed with all the files.

16:55 <epsy> hi
17:09 <z-man-work> So, basically, all I have to do to screw with [dlh] is commit to the trunk, then to 0.2.8? I'll keep that in mind :)
17:28 <[dlh]> z-man-work: yeah, basically :)
17:34 <Lucifer_arma> heh, we'll get it straightened out one of these days
17:34 <Lucifer_arma> if it mkes you feel better, every commit somehow triggers 4 builds on my machine, 2 for the client and 2 for the server
17:37 <[dlh]> Grr, I'm finding out pretty much every cross-platform GUI toolkit sucks.
17:41 -!- epsy [n=epsy@mar75-4-82-227-65-72.fbx.proxad.net] has quit ["END OF LINE"]
17:42 <z-man-work> Depends on your definition of "sucks", I'd say. Of course, none can be as good as the native GUI of choice on each platform.
17:43 <z-man-work> Have you looked at what Eclipse is using? It's Java, of course, so probably of limited use, but it tries to adapt to each platform's look and feel.
17:43 -!- epsy [n=epsy@mar75-4-82-227-65-72.fbx.proxad.net] has joined #armagetron
17:45 <[dlh]> I've looked into SWT. It is a heavy-weight (native widget) toolkit, but I'm not too great in Java yet (learning it for a class).
17:46 <[dlh]> wxWidgets is another native widget toolkit. I've done some work in the python wxWidgets project, but, eck, the code ends up looking horrible.
17:47 <[dlh]> I don't really care if it looks native or not at this point. I just want development to not suck :)
17:48 <z-man-work> ncurses? :)
17:48 <[dlh]> haha
17:49 <[dlh]> for a aamap creator program? I don't think that'd work to well :)
17:49 <[dlh]> an *
17:50 <[dlh]> I think next I'll try squeak + tweak (http://tweak.impara.de/). Man those are some lame project names.
17:50 <[dlh]> I like smalltalk, so hopefully it ends up more elegant than my other attempts.
17:51 <luke-jr|work> [dlh]: Qt pwns
17:53 <luke-jr|work> especially as a language
17:54 <[dlh]> I haven't tried Qt yet, because it is so huge. Qt 4 would be a nice (it even compiles to a Mac OS X .framework), but I want a higher level language. Plus with Squeak Smalltalk, everything is contained in an image (image based languages ftw!), so it is super easy to ship the app.
17:54 <@armabot> armagetronad: mlbelenus * r7103 /private/belenus/OpenBSD/ports/games/armagetronad/server/patches/ (patch-batch_rcd_startstop_in patch-batch_serverstarter_in): Replaced $(( )) with `expr `.
17:55 <[dlh]> python + qt might work, but sounds like a pain to ship an application, even with py2app or whatever.
17:56 <luke-jr|work> eww, Python :x
17:56 <[dlh]> heh
17:56 <luke-jr|work> why isn't Qt high-level enough?
17:57 <[dlh]> You can't get more succinct than Smalltalk :)
17:57 <[dlh]> plus you get good tools and a good enviroment.
17:57 <luke-jr|work> BTW, Qt apps can compile to a single binary ;)
17:57 <[dlh]> environment*
17:57 <luke-jr|work> it's just Mac OS X's .app that doesn't play with single binaries well
17:58 <luke-jr|work> FWIW, MOO uses images :p
17:58 <luke-jr|work> but nobody's ported a toolkit to MOO yet so... :o
17:59 <[dlh]> image based languages are neat. sometimes they can be a pain without proper tools like version control — thankfully squeak has Monticello.
17:59 <luke-jr|work> O.o
17:59 <luke-jr|work> yeah, version control is a problem w/ MOO :p
17:59 <luke-jr|work> you can't properly merge diffs
18:00 <luke-jr|work> but does Monticello work with Svn?
18:01 <[dlh]> Ahh, no. It is it's own separate system. It is a distributed VCS.
18:02 <[dlh]> Smalltalk VCSs need to be closely integrated with the environment.
18:03 <luke-jr|work> :/
18:03 <luke-jr|work> ugly
18:04 <[dlh]> Smalltalk generally doesn't follow the unix mindset.
18:05 <[dlh]> unless you're using GNU Smalltalk, but ew.

This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
