[2024-03-08 00:33:25] <Lucifer_arma> now grunge is classified as a form of metal, just because they use heavy bass mixed guitars. But it's identical to 70s rock. It's unbelievable. They brought nothing new to the field. All the lyrics about pain and shit, metal had been doing for 20 years already

Music is far more open-source now.
[2024-03-08 00:56:21] <armagetronbridge> 08discord:delinquent| In any case, the music scene today is so collossally varied I don't think it necessarily changes anything. There are bands doing music just for the youtube or bandcamp revenue, bands that have never been signed and yet have done major world tours (looking at halocene here), bands from every genre under the sun, bands creating entirely new genres. Music is far more open-source now.

[2024-03-08 12:46:03] <Z-Man> You don't PORT to rust. You REWRITE.
[2024-03-08 12:46:03] <Z-Man> The real benefit of rust is not plain memory safety, it's thread safety. Basic memory safety is not too hard in C++. Just use smart pointers and standard containers and you are 99% there.
[2024-03-08 12:46:03] <Z-Man> You can still get problems with function side effects, say your member function calls another function, that calls another, and so on, and that function resets the smart pointer your first object was managed by.

[2024-03-08 12:46:36] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| That is about the only cause of memory problems at my day job. Especially since the C++ bits can call .NET bits that then can do whatever the F they want.

[2024-03-08 12:47:59] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Better smart pointers would help there. Use shared_ptr for everything, keep a reference to everything you are actively using in a shared_ptr on the stack. That eliminates that problem.

[2024-03-08 12:48:42] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| At a price, of course; modifying shared_ptrs is relatively expensive, since they need to manipulate an atomic reference counter.

[2024-03-08 12:49:30] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| If you're single threaded, you could write your own shared_ptr with a plain reference counter.

[2024-03-08 12:50:59] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Or you can give your smart pointers custom deleters; that is possible for both shared_ptr and unique_ptr. That custom deleter would then not actually delete the object right away, but put them in a list to be deleted later further up the callstack when we know it won't cause any problems.

[2024-03-08 12:52:49] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Which of course makes you lose the one big selling point for C++, that you know precisely when destructors are called. So don't do that for objects where you need that property.

[2024-03-08 12:54:00] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Actually, I think I'll try the custom deleter thing at work. We have a good point to actually do the destruction.

[2024-03-08 12:56:07] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Rust solves these problems by forcing you to be damned strict. The death by side effects can't happen there, because while you are in a function that needs an object, no other function is allowed to have write access to it, so nobody can delete it from under your ass.

[2024-03-08 12:57:11] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| If you stay in safe mode. Calling .NET code that needs access to all your stuff definitely is not safe mode compatible.

[2024-03-08 12:59:15] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Writing thread safe code in .NET is just as hard as in C++, if not harder. In C++, you have 'const'. That allows you to separate your functions visibly into functions that are safe to run concurrently (the const ones) and the ones that are not. No such thing exists in .NET.

[2024-03-08 13:00:47] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| So you either handle the separation by annotations, documentations, comments, conventions... or you treat all functions as the non-consts they are.

[2024-03-08 13:09:23] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| AVOID SHARED MUTABLE STATE is still rule number one for good multithreaded code, and .NET makes that harder.

[2024-03-08 16:31:32] <armagetronbridge> 15irc:Z-Man| Yeah, that is common practice. All WPF and WinForms functions also need to be called from one thread. If you yourself run multiple threads, you then have to marshall your calls over to the main one. We use async/await for that, which is convenient, but it requires async/await and its overhead all over the place then.

[2024-03-08 23:04:25] <Lucifer_arma> I also think C++ is going too slowly adopting threadsafe and process safe APIs, but it will get there. Boost already has it all, but I don't know how easy it is to use
