06:10 <Lucifer_arma> civ?
06:10 <Lucifer_arma> I'm in a foul mood and want to blow shit up
06:10 <Lucifer_arma> small map, lots of gold and settlers and high tech, etc
06:10 <spidey> FPS seem to take care of that with me :D
06:11 <Lucifer_arma> holy shit, when did all the civs declare war on me?
06:11 <Lucifer_arma> no, my mood isn't an angry mood, just generally foul
06:11 <Lucifer_arma> I'm a grab a smoke, if you want to play some civ when I get back, say so :)
06:12 <Lucifer_arma> of course most other people are invited too, but I want a pretty quick-moving game
06:17 <luke-jr> I might
06:21 <Lucifer_arma> so, anybody up for civ?
06:25 <armabot> armagetronad: luke-jr * r7358 /armagetronad/branches/0.2.8/armagetronad/language/english_base_notranslate.txt: some of these should be translated? (ps, Im up for civ maybe)

07:00 <spidey> ok
07:00 <spidey> did you make me a AI like i told luke to tell you to do?
07:00 <spidey> i decided not to play in this scrim we're having
07:01 <spidey> Lucifer_arma:
07:01 <Lucifer_arma> no we didn't, but there's ais for you to pick
07:01 <Lucifer_arma> we're only on like the 3rd turn
07:01 <Lucifer_arma> about to set turn timeout, so hurry :)
07:01 <spidey> do i have time to compile teh warclient?
07:03 <Lucifer_arma> probably not
07:03 <Lucifer_arma> sorry
07:03 <Lucifer_arma> you could join with the old client, and start compiling the warclient, and when it's ready, rejoin with it

11:50 <Lucifer_arma_> well, when y'all start your invasion, you're going to get a good laugh :)
11:50 -!- Lucifer_arma_ is now known as Lucifer_arma
11:51 <Lucifer_arma> my whole navy's concentrated around mordor, so they won't be able to stop you, or even retaliate much because it's all cruisers
11:51 <Lucifer_arma> my home cities are all defended by riflemen :)
11:51 <Lucifer_arma> never bothered upgrading the MI since I couldn't just buy that upgrade, and we were warring in Mordor
11:51 <luke-jr> Lucifer_arma: we're using your server for chat
11:51 <luke-jr> :p
11:51 <Lucifer_arma> so there was no threat
11:51 <luke-jr> there hasn't been a single turn gone by
11:52 <luke-jr> I was just spoiling X-Files for spidey
11:52 <Lucifer_arma> so anyway, after I had pushed past my defensive line against iceland, I tore it down. Didn't need it anymore
11:52 <Lucifer_arma> might have had some riflemen still fortified
11:53 <Lucifer_arma> spidey had been building long enough that he should've been able to just walk all over me in a few turns
11:53 <Lucifer_arma> in fact, I'd probably hold it against him if he couldn't :)
11:53 <Lucifer_arma> if he moved quickly enough, I didn't have high enough production to muster up a defense
11:54 <Lucifer_arma> he probably had a window of like 10 turns where I was really weak
11:54 <Lucifer_arma> after that, don't know, I don't think I could've mustered a defense against him anyway, because the cities he would have taken while I was doing that were paying for the factories in the cities I'd have to use to muster the defense
12:00 <spidey> actually
12:00 <spidey> i had 4 MI and a tank in each city
12:01 <spidey> i knew if i was gonna do it,and pull it off
12:01 <spidey> i'd have to have a really good defense
12:01 <spidey> so
12:01 <spidey> coastal defense
12:01 <spidey> SDI
12:01 <spidey> and walls in each city
12:01 <spidey> costs me 94 /turn
12:01 <luke-jr> pfft walls
12:01 <spidey> SDI mainly
12:02 <spidey> i was gonna go in with howitzers
12:02 <spidey> and nukes if i really needed
12:02 <spidey> i was close to having manhattened project
12:02 <Lucifer_arma> with about 20 howitzers, you should have had me taken out in 5 turns or so
12:02 <Lucifer_arma> assuming enough MI to take the cities after the howitzers cleared them
12:02 <Lucifer_arma> I still had a pretty good war going on in Mordor's land, so I couldn't use those cities for much, would have to convert their production to continue that war
12:03 <spidey> well
12:03 <spidey> the reason they lasted so long was because i poured over 10k into mordors
12:03 <luke-jr> that seems redundant
12:03 <Lucifer_arma> that one island I took from Mordor was badly underdeveloped when I took it, and all I did was rail it, and make a couple of the cities build cruise missiles
12:03 <luke-jr> lol
12:03 <spidey> i did that so i'd have a longer window to build
12:03 <luke-jr> so spidey was the enemy all along ;p
12:03 <Lucifer_arma> I'll believe that was a factor, but my production was piss-poor
12:03 <luke-jr> sneaky
12:04 <Lucifer_arma> highest city was only 29? come on! ;)
12:04 <spidey> i had a 24 without factories
12:04 <Lucifer_arma> I was losing units faster than I could reinforce them
12:04 <spidey> my cities where production rich without them
12:04 <Lucifer_arma> well, mine were factories + hoover dam
12:04 <Lucifer_arma> and still my highest city was only 29
12:04 <Lucifer_arma> that's why I don't think I could've built a defense
12:05 <Lucifer_arma> maybe if I had taken the time to MI my cities I could have pulled some reserves to stall your advance
12:05 <Lucifer_arma> but since I hadn't done that, and I only had riflemen, there was no chance
12:05 <Lucifer_arma> riflemen are one hit with a howitzer, you can clear a city that has only 2 riflemen in it with one howitzer
12:06 <Lucifer_arma> since I didn't have howitzers, and I only had tanks, you could get away with just moving one MI to take the city after clearing it, freeing that howitzer for the next turn
12:06 <Lucifer_arma> because tanks against MI take about 3-4 tanks per MI to take a city
12:06 <spidey> yea
12:06 <Lucifer_arma> assuming no city walls, of course (which is what I had, no city walls. The only walled cities I had were the defensive line I built against iceland)
12:07 <spidey> see my main worry was
12:07 <spidey> the bombers you still had in your base cities
12:07 <Lucifer_arma> none
12:07 <spidey> plus the ones across on the mordor's island
12:07 <spidey> and your cruisers
12:07 <Lucifer_arma> 1
12:07 <Lucifer_arma> my cruisers were busy, and cruisers are useless attacking cities unless you have a bunch to spend on it
12:08 <Lucifer_arma> I was losing bombers fast fighting mordor, that's why I started building cruise missiles
12:08 <Lucifer_arma> if I'm going to lose my heavy artillery on an attack, I want a cheap replacement :)
12:08 <spidey> heh
12:08 <spidey> if you had enough
12:08 <spidey> you might could have gotten me
12:08 <Lucifer_arma> I did suddenly remember that I had 3 bombers on auto-attack in one of your cities
12:08 <Lucifer_arma> well, I was using my missiles as soon as they were built
12:08 <spidey> but the SDI is the main thing that would have protected me from you
12:08 <Lucifer_arma> trying not to let luke get the drop on me over there :)
12:09 <Lucifer_arma> it would have been no contest :)
12:09 <Lucifer_arma> if you wanted to just pwn me, that was a good game to do it in
12:10 <Lucifer_arma> but if you're wanting to really fight me and see who would win, that game wasn't a good one to do it in :)
12:10 <Lucifer_arma> I had configured for fighting ai after we all 3 allied, and didn't bother building defenses against humans
12:10 <Lucifer_arma> remember those forts I built to make sure luke didn't put cities in that area between us?
12:10 <spidey> ya
12:10 <Lucifer_arma> I wound up putting cities there
12:10 <Lucifer_arma> that's an area I would have not settled if we were going to fight :)
12:11 <Lucifer_arma> I would have smallpoxed the iceland cities I took instead to get my coinage cities
12:11 <spidey> heh
12:11 <Lucifer_arma> lots of places to build internal defenses that I didn't build, etc.
12:11 <spidey> i didn't really check out your cities
12:11 <spidey> so i didn't know what i was up against completely, just what i'd seen you attacking with
12:11 <Lucifer_arma> you should have, you would probably have decided it wasn't worth it
12:11 <Lucifer_arma> since the next game I'm not going to trust you :)
12:12 <spidey> :P
12:12 <spidey> well
12:12 <spidey> i'd always wanted to try it
12:12 <spidey> so i figured i would :P
12:12 <Lucifer_arma> it was a good strategy
12:12 <Lucifer_arma> and I won't lie, I figured you were preparing something against me
12:13 <Lucifer_arma> quite a ways before I mentioned it :)
12:13 <Lucifer_arma> I just didn't care, since I figured by the time you were going to move, I was going to be done playing anyway
12:13 <spidey> lol
12:14 <spidey> but i didn't even show any signs of it...
12:14 <Lucifer_arma> I was ready to quit an hour ago or so, when it was pretty obvious we were going to win against mordor (it wasn't clear when I started fighting them, they were tough)
12:14 <Lucifer_arma> yes, you did
12:14 <spidey> because techniqually it wasn't even a plan until about 10 turns before i did it
12:14 <Lucifer_arma> 1. You didn't go offensive, and you quit science.
12:14 <spidey> i didn't quit science :P
12:14 <spidey> i was stil lpulling 300ish pts/turn
12:14 <Lucifer_arma> you quit feeding me science, anyway
12:15 <spidey> should have asked for it :P
12:15 <Lucifer_arma> that's another thing I would've done, brought my own science up :)
12:15 <Lucifer_arma> hey, I'm not faulting you for it, just saying that's a sign
12:15 <spidey> i wasn't really paying attention to what tech i got till a few turns before i decided to betray
12:15 <Lucifer_arma> my own attitude is the same, if you want it, come ask for it, otherwise you get it when I get around to it
12:16 <Lucifer_arma> there were other signs, but I forget what they were now
12:16 <Lucifer_arma> oh yeah, big one
12:16 <spidey> i didn't go offensive because
12:16 <Lucifer_arma> 2. When you're planning a betrayal against me, you get real quiet towards me.
12:16 <spidey> i had 0 units
12:16 <Lucifer_arma> usually you tell me what you're going to do when you're wanting me to help or stand aside
12:16 <spidey> in all my cities untill a few turns before :P
12:16 <spidey> well
12:17 <spidey> i had 2 units in the cities that needed them oto keep 'em out of disorder
12:17 <luke-jr> LOL
12:17 <Lucifer_arma> oh yeah, and 3. I hadn't protected you this game, so you didn't really owe me anything
12:17 <Lucifer_arma> which meant it was a real possibility you'd do it :)
12:18 <Lucifer_arma> 10 turns before we turned off the timeout would have been 20 minutes
12:18 <Lucifer_arma> I'm not sure when I first started thinking you were up to something
12:18 <spidey> lol
12:18 <Lucifer_arma> might have been longer, those 10 turns, since the timeout was up to 2.5 minutes, now that I think about it
12:19 <spidey> well
12:19 <Lucifer_arma> anyway, when you delay going offense against an ai, it's usually because you're building defenses for a human
12:19 <spidey> the last 5ish turns lasted atleast 5 minutes
12:19 <Lucifer_arma> because you know damn well if your offensive is even just mediocre, the ai won't threaten you after you attack him
12:20 <spidey> not true :)
12:20 <spidey> you should know by now
12:20 <spidey> if i go in, i go in with overkill
12:20 <Lucifer_arma> man, you neglect your home defenses against ais as much as I do
12:20 <Lucifer_arma> well, maybe not that much, but still quite a bit
12:21 <spidey> yea
12:21 <Lucifer_arma> maybe you wouldn't leave a bunch of riflemen as your only defensive units, but you still wouldn't take time to build SDIs and shit
12:21 <spidey> lol
12:21 <spidey> i'd leave atleast 2 MI
12:21 <spidey> unless the game was almost over and i needed extra units right hten
12:21 <Lucifer_arma> you want your piece of the loot, and the only way to get it when I'm going offensive on the bastard is if you hurry up and get over there :)
12:21 <Lucifer_arma> yeah
12:22 <Lucifer_arma> I never managed to even put all the auto-attackers I wanted
12:22 <Lucifer_arma> really, I've decided my defenses even against ais aren't complete without 2 auto-attackers in every city
12:22 <Lucifer_arma> that gives me 1 unit per city for a strategic reserve and still leaves 1 auto-attacker
12:22 <Lucifer_arma> at the end of the game, I get an extra reserve
12:23 <Lucifer_arma> the one invasion mordor tried, I shut down almost immediately
12:23 <Lucifer_arma> the real fight with mordor, probably where the game was decided, was a navy battle and a land campaign that luke ran
12:23 <spidey> heh
12:23 <Lucifer_arma> I fought the navy battle, luke fought the land campaign
12:23 <spidey> the reason you broke them
12:23 <spidey> is because i quit feeding them gold when i finsally needed it
12:24 <Lucifer_arma> they weren't broken yet :)
12:24 <spidey> i was giving the 1k+ a turn
12:24 <spidey> until i needed it for my stuff
12:24 <Lucifer_arma> we were winning, but he kept sending pretty good counterattacks
12:24 <Lucifer_arma> yeah, thing is, the cities he had were good enough for hiim to keep up a good defense even after that
12:24 <Lucifer_arma> there was a point where it seemed the defense got weaker, I"ll give you that
12:24 <Lucifer_arma> your gold certainly helped them a lot
12:25 <Lucifer_arma> but dunedain was the one with the real problem. :) Did you have contact with them?
12:25 -!- noob7 is now known as noob7_away
12:25 <Lucifer_arma> mordor got easy after luke took their capital
12:25 <spidey> yea
12:26 <spidey> i bought a fighter outright
12:26 <Lucifer_arma> I didn't check, but I suspect mordor and dunedain were fighting each other
12:26 <spidey> and crashed it beside there city
12:26 <spidey> rofl
12:26 <Lucifer_arma> haha
12:26 <Lucifer_arma> man, at the beginning of my invasion, I was buying 3 bombers every 2 turns
12:26 <Lucifer_arma> so I wasn't paying full price, but I was still paying ~1500 gold every time
12:26 <spidey> heh
12:27 <Lucifer_arma> and now I know what it looks like when a human is propping up an AI :)
12:27 <spidey> :P
12:27 <Lucifer_arma> I still don't think luke would've taken their capital if I hadn't invaded before he moved
12:27 <Lucifer_arma> mordor put one of those huge unit stacks next to that city after I took it, and I hit it with my bomber
12:28 <Lucifer_arma> then it was like 2 turns before luke moved in
12:28 <Lucifer_arma> and he took 3 cities and then stopped
12:28 <Lucifer_arma> I guess he was waiting for his new army to be built
12:29 <spidey> lol
12:31 <Lucifer_arma> anyway, I was fighting mordor on a shoestring. I didn't want to have to save it off and restore it later, I wanted to be at least at a decisive moment, so we could quit and not feel like we had to restore
12:32 <Lucifer_arma> now I'm going to bed, I'm sleepy
12:32 <Lucifer_arma> another time, we'll fight. One of these days, we just have to not start it at 4am
12:34 <spidey> lol
12:34 <spidey> ok

15:48 <wrtlprnft> hi

15:53 <deja_vu> hey beta_USA :)
15:59 <luke-jr> wrtlprnft: I think I fixed that already
15:59 * luke-jr notes that when he comes in here and yells for a test, people should actually tell him if those tests fail ☺
16:00 <wrtlprnft> http://beta.armagetronad.net/add-resource/upload.suid-php
16:00 <wrtlprnft> yeah, you're right, that page doesn't show up wrong
16:01 <luke-jr> what about it?
16:01 <wrtlprnft> but the error message is missing a </body></html>
16:01 <luke-jr> so add it
16:01 <wrtlprnft> nvm
16:01 <luke-jr> I think it's cuz FreeNode booted him for flooding
16:01 <wrtlprnft> it doesn't even have an xhtml header
16:02 <luke-jr> oh that
16:02 <luke-jr> I don't think PHP is XHTML compatible
16:02 <wrtlprnft> so it gets parsed as invalid html 4.01 transitional, and the missing end tags aren't even errors
16:02 <wrtlprnft> ?!
16:02 <luke-jr> at least, not unless you avoid 'die' and such
16:02 <wrtlprnft> write your own error reporting function
16:02 <luke-jr> nah
16:03 <luke-jr> I'm slowly starting to use Perl for stuff anyway
16:03 <wrtlprnft> eek
16:03 <luke-jr> lol
16:03 <luke-jr> first-class regexs are tempting
16:04 <luke-jr> too bad the whole braces syntax is screwed up
16:04 <luke-jr> eg, you MUST use braces in an 'if' statement
16:04 <luke-jr> on the bright side, it means functions can take code blocks as arguments O.o
16:05 * wrtlprnft always puts braces around the contents of if statements
16:05 <wrtlprnft> much more convienient for quickly pasting debug code
16:07 <luke-jr> potentially
16:07 <luke-jr> or you could use a comma instead of a semicolon on the debug thing
16:07 <luke-jr> debug('I got here'),
16:07 <luke-jr> in C, anyhow
16:08 <wrtlprnft> true
16:08 <wrtlprnft> does , guarantee execution order?
16:08 <luke-jr> I believe so
16:09 <luke-jr> basically , is like || or &&, but without the condition attached
16:09 <luke-jr> a,b is (a||1)&&b
16:09 <luke-jr> ;)
16:10 <wrtlprnft> not exactly
16:10 <wrtlprnft> a,b returns the value of b
16:10 <wrtlprnft> even if b=42
16:10 <wrtlprnft> in that case (a||1)&&b would return 1, but a,b would return 42 :)
16:11 <luke-jr> so does (a||1)&&b
16:11 <wrtlprnft> nope.
16:11 <wrtlprnft> && always returns 0 or 1
16:11 <luke-jr> nope
16:11 <wrtlprnft> (a && 0) + b would be the same thing as a,b for ints :)
16:11 -!- optimus [i=lucifer@beigetower/reboot] has quit ["Sleep? Oh boy! That's where I'm a viking!"]
16:12 <luke-jr> odd
16:12 * luke-jr ponders where he got the idea that a&&b returned 0 or b
16:13 <luke-jr> MOO
16:13 <luke-jr> :p
16:13 <luke-jr> probably Perl too
16:13 <wrtlprnft> int a=123, b=42;
16:13 <wrtlprnft> std::cout << ((a||1) && b) << std::endl;
16:13 <wrtlprnft> std::cout << (a,b) << std::endl;
16:13 <wrtlprnft> writes 1\n42\n ;)
16:19 <beta_USA> hm. I don't know C++ but what's the use of "a,b" ?

This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
