00:20 <Lucifer_arma_> yay, I just took over dhcp services on my network :)
00:20 <Lucifer_arma_> now my laptop can be configured to use dhcp all the time, and get a static ip address at home so I can route stuff to it :)

00:26 <Lucifer_arma_> oops
00:26 <Lucifer_arma_> screwed up my dns here

02:47 * digitx is away (bye)
02:56 <Lucifer_arma> he didn't wait long enough, heh
02:56 <mkzelda> sup
02:57 <Lucifer_arma> GodTodd: what do you need to know?
02:57 <Lucifer_arma> well, I got my thin client to boot to a login screen, but it didn't do anything after that :/
02:57 <Lucifer_arma> I need a floppy disk
02:57 * Lucifer_arma wonders if it's even possible to buy such things anymore
03:07 <Lucifer_arma> http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,291199,00.html
03:07 <Lucifer_arma> better not let hyphy back in here
03:10 <GodTodd> Lucifer_arma: oh...i was just wondering if you happened to know if the power steering/alternator belt also had to wrap around the main engine pulley or if it's just the two
03:10 <GodTodd> but i suppose the length of it will tell me :)
03:10 <Lucifer_arma> it always does
03:11 <Lucifer_arma> well, there are a few rare cases where it doesn't, but subarus aren't that rare
03:11 <GodTodd> nope
03:12 <GodTodd> lost my power steering last night as i was coming home....popped the bonnet today and found a few belt shreds and a couple free-spinning pulleys and the engine won't turn over
03:12 <GodTodd> i needs me a new belt :)
03:13 <Lucifer_arma> ah oh
03:13 <Lucifer_arma> ummmm, does this belt also go around the water pump?
03:13 <Lucifer_arma> er, what's the year make and model again?
03:13 <GodTodd> don't think so
03:14 <GodTodd> 98 subaru forester
03:18 <Lucifer_arma> looks a lot like a serpentine belt
03:18 <spidey> rofl
03:18 <spidey> they're saying that pot gives you psychoses now
03:19 <Lucifer_arma> how long did you drive it after you lost power steering?
03:20 <Lucifer_arma> spidey: that's because it does
03:20 <Lucifer_arma> when you live in a fantasy world for 10+ hours a day, you turn crazy
03:20 <Lucifer_arma> same thing happens if you read fiction books for 10+ hours a day ;)
03:33 <Lucifer_arma> er, how do you get a list of login shells again?
03:48 <GodTodd> Lucifer_arma: drove it for maybe two miles after losing power steering

05:42 <GodTodd> Lucifer_arma: any way to tell if i overheated it?
05:42 <Lucifer_arma> GodTodd: compression test
05:43 <GodTodd> hrmm
05:43 <Lucifer_arma> best, stick the belt on, charge the battery, start 'er up
05:43 <Lucifer_arma> if it runs smoothly, you're fine :)
05:45 <GodTodd> that's what i was figuring on doing
05:45 <GodTodd> :)
05:45 <GodTodd> if there's problems, karen's dad gets home on sunday and he can look at it ;)
05:48 <Lucifer_arma> well, my kids are all excited about my new thin client
05:48 <Lucifer_arma> I wonder if sound works over there
05:48 <GodTodd> i'ma have to look into getting windows->ubuntu printing to work
05:49 <GodTodd> that's the only reason that i haven't converted the kitchen computer
05:51 <GodTodd> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plano%2C_Texas <---- welp, i'm never leaving plano
05:51 <GodTodd> heh
05:56 <Lucifer_arma> oh yeah, hey, my wife got that job
05:56 <Lucifer_arma> she starts wednesday
05:56 <GodTodd> what's she gonna be doing?
05:57 <Lucifer_arma> secretary
05:57 <GodTodd> ahhh cool :)
05:57 <Lucifer_arma> the lady that's in the job now and is expected to train her apparently hasn't done anything in 9 months
05:57 <Lucifer_arma> so there's 9 months of filing and shit that needs to be done
05:57 <GodTodd> haha
05:57 <Lucifer_arma> so our friend Sylvia became her new task manager, and told her to do all the stuff she hadn't done
05:57 <GodTodd> she gonna get decent pay then, i would guess
05:57 <Lucifer_arma> so the girl put in her notice instead, and Sylvia told my wife she should go apply :)
05:57 <GodTodd> not rich type pay but probably decent
05:58 <Lucifer_arma> it's not bad
05:58 <Lucifer_arma> she'll be able to support us on her own, not living terribly well, but it'll take us off food stamps
05:58 <Lucifer_arma> and let me really focus on school without too many distractions
05:58 <GodTodd> that's definitely good then :)
05:58 <Lucifer_arma> of course I'll still be working in the lab, so together we'll bring in a decent amount :)
05:59 <Lucifer_arma> but I'm going to drop down to 6 hours/week in the fall
05:59 <Lucifer_arma> they just haven't scheduled a lot of physics in that room in the fall
05:59 <GodTodd> karen told me i could work if i wanted to but that she preferred that i concentrate on school
05:59 <Lucifer_arma> rather, most of the physics scheduled there conflicts with my statics class
05:59 <Lucifer_arma> well, I'd recommend you working, but working at the school
05:59 <Lucifer_arma> flipping burgers: no
05:59 <Lucifer_arma> immersing yourself in your academic environment: hell yeah!
06:00 <GodTodd> well...i figure i'll wait til UTD...then go for an internship at one of the companies around here
06:00 <GodTodd> that's how karen got in at TI years ago
06:00 <Lucifer_arma> TI? heh
06:00 <Lucifer_arma> that's where my wife's brother-in-law works
06:00 <Lucifer_arma> (is he my brother-in-law too?)
06:00 <GodTodd> he work at one of the plants up here?
06:01 <Lucifer_arma> yep
06:01 <Lucifer_arma> they live in Plano...
06:01 <GodTodd> ah
06:01 <Lucifer_arma> right after they hired him, they laid off all their engineers
06:01 <GodTodd> they just built a new plant (huge) not long ago
06:01 <Lucifer_arma> then they told him they couldn't actually lay him off because he had been there less than a year
06:01 <Lucifer_arma> so he was required to go to work, but had no work to do
06:01 <GodTodd> yeah...probably around the time they sold a bunch of shit to raytheon
06:02 <Lucifer_arma> I don't like to player-hate, but I was losing my contract at the same time, so it was pretty irritating to see a guy being told to do nothing and get paid $80k or whatever he's getting
06:02 <GodTodd> i bet
06:03 <Lucifer_arma> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LTSPHowTo?highlight=%28ltsp%29
06:03 <Lucifer_arma> that's what I installed for the thin client
06:05 <Lucifer_arma> so now I've got 2 desktops and a server running feisty
06:05 <Lucifer_arma> just got the laptop left
06:08 <GodTodd> setting all the workstations to run the thin client?
06:20 <Lucifer_arma> well, sure
06:20 <Lucifer_arma> there's only one :)
06:21 <Lucifer_arma> the ltsp server is a workstation
06:21 <Lucifer_arma> now I'm going to put arma on the other server and see how it runs with such an empty server
06:22 <Lucifer_arma> that server hasn't been this empty in a couple of years
06:23 <GodTodd> heh
06:32 <Lucifer_arma> hey, you guys join Swamplords in Hell

06:47 <DrJoeTron> spidey in a few minutes wanna try that portal mod?
06:52 <Lucifer_arma> DrJoeTron: come to my server
06:54 <DrJoeTron> Lucifer_arma ko
07:08 <DrJoeTron> Lucifer_arma get back here
07:10 <Lucifer_arma> DrJoeTron: rejoin real quick :)
07:15 <Lucifer_arma> aww
07:15 <Lucifer_arma> DrJoeTron: I got spam-kicked!
07:15 <Lucifer_arma> fucking admin's a jerk
07:15 <DrJoeTron> stop spamming than
07:15 <DrJoeTron> yeah fuck him
07:15 <DrJoeTron> lets make our own server
07:15 <Lucifer_arma> remind me not to play there again
07:16 <DrJoeTron> rubber at like 40
07:16 <Lucifer_arma> GodTodd: when you get a chance, can you try a commit to your website and tell me if it works?
07:19 <GodTodd> Lucifer_arma: do i have to change anything, or just commit?
07:19 <Lucifer_arma> you have to change something for it to commit anything :)
07:19 <GodTodd> hmmm
07:19 * GodTodd tries to think of a simple change to do.
07:19 <GodTodd> heh
07:21 <DrJoeTron> hey
07:22 <Lucifer_arma> I usually just open the first file I see and put "spurious change" in it
07:22 <Lucifer_arma> commit it with a message that says "spurious commit"
07:22 <Lucifer_arma> then undo it
07:23 <Lucifer_arma> also, it's not the commit I'm wondering about (although that is important), it's the part where the website gets updated
07:29 <GodTodd> committed
07:31 <GodTodd> when does the site get rebuilt? i'm assuming the buildbot does that
07:31 <Lucifer_arma> ummm, where should I see the change?
07:31 <GodTodd> the header
07:31 <Lucifer_arma> it should be rebuilt immediately
07:31 <Lucifer_arma> er, make a visible change :)
07:32 <GodTodd> ?
07:33 <GodTodd> there....took out one of the links
07:38 <Lucifer_arma> oh yeah, forgot to make txt2tags available somehwere on the path
07:40 <GodTodd> ahh heh
07:42 <GodTodd> looks updated to me :)
07:44 <Lucifer_arma> ok, it's broke
07:44 <GodTodd> and the undo took affect immediately
07:44 <GodTodd> hrmm
07:44 <Lucifer_arma> er, I guess I need to bring back the buildbot site for it

07:54 <Lucifer_arma> txt2tags: Error: Cannot read file: mywriting/../templates/filters.t2t <--- and a bad include
07:54 <Durka> hi Lucifer_arma
07:54 <Lucifer_arma> well, that means the build is broke and you get the red mark is all
07:54 <Lucifer_arma> it's safe to ignore for now, but it may cause anomalies later
07:55 <Lucifer_arma> I need an apache-style config parser in python
07:55 <GodTodd> yeah...like i said...i kinda stopped in the middle of building the site and it'll be a couple weeks til i can try and fix it :)
07:56 <GodTodd> well...theoretically i could be trying to fix it right now but i don't know if i'm in a web dev mood right now heh

08:06 <GodTodd> i am going to get a new one at some point (1 GB just doesn't do it anymore)
08:07 <Lucifer_arma> I can't believe that in all this time nobody's written an apache-style config parser in python!

09:59 <Lucifer_arma> 64MB
09:59 <Lucifer_arma> not enough for a real installation of anything other than the windows me that was on there
09:59 <Lucifer_arma> soooo...... what do you do with an old computer? ;)
09:59 <Lucifer_arma> turns out that ltsp is an important component in edubuntu, so the ubuntu guys have a pretty good handle on it and it installed pretty easily
10:00 <Lucifer_arma> it uses an ssh connection to start the display manager, which is a lot more secure than xdmcp
10:00 <Lucifer_arma> not that it matters on my lan, but it's nice to know, you know?

22:53 <spidey_> hmm
22:53 <spidey_> which kinda protocol would be better for gaming
22:53 <spidey_> peer-to-peer, or peer-to-server?
22:54 <wrtlprnft> peer to peer would have less lag if every player communicates with every other player
22:55 <spidey_> it would seem that way
22:55 <wrtlprnft> but it will be more difficult to set up for the individual players, harder to program, and use up more upstream on the clients
22:55 <wrtlprnft> and hard to make cheatproof
22:55 <spidey_> heh
22:56 <spidey_> they're trying so hard to make the game hacker-proof

This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
