07:17 <DrJoeTron> and then durka got on the admin line and said "go fuck yourselves"and banned us
07:17 <DrJoeTron> made my night
07:17 <Lucifer_arma> so, basically, after the tie got broken they just kept complaining about lag?
07:17 <DrJoeTron> yeah
07:18 <Lucifer_arma> of course, had the tie broken the other way, then they were having pristine perfect connections
07:18 <DrJoeTron> of course
07:18 <DrJoeTron> well unfortunate for them
07:18 <DrJoeTron> im like RIGHT by the server
07:18 <DrJoeTron> since its luke's

07:23 <DrJoeTron> keep it on the DL that its dinosaurs with hats
07:23 <DrJoeTron> because i was seen talking about this earlier
07:24 <DrJoeTron> so i'm tied to it

07:26 <Lucifer_arma> so what's the clan tag?
07:26 <Lucifer_arma> or rather, I'm going in with my regular name right now, but I"ll need the clan tag sooner or later :)

10:05 <Lucifer_arma> and you're the person I was trying to remember being on shawcable :)
10:06 <Lucifer_arma> wait a minute, that *is* you
10:06 <anjori> have you heard the hans reiser news?
10:06 <anjori> yes
10:06 <Lucifer_arma> he's a killer?
10:07 <Lucifer_arma> in a way I hope he did kill his wife
10:07 <anjori> oh?
10:07 <Lucifer_arma> it would show that the open source community is big enough to contain the requisite number of killers any large population has to have
10:07 <Lucifer_arma> I guess it's not a milestone you really shoot for
10:08 <anjori> heh
10:08 <Lucifer_arma> but I hope he turns out innocent so he can finish reiser4 :)
10:08 * Lucifer_arma switched his server out to reiserFS awhile back and is really happy with it
10:09 <anjori> tasteless, but geekfully funny joke on slashdot: What's the difference between O.J. and Hans Reiser?
10:09 <Lucifer_arma> what's eerie is that my wife just hooked up the antenna the other day (reiser kept a journal) and I watched some show about a lawyer
10:09 <Lucifer_arma> and they did exctly the same thing, indicted the suspect before they had the body
10:10 <anjori> heh. you must have read, too.
10:10 <Lucifer_arma> yeah, sometimes the slashdot crowd is really good at digging up further information for a story
10:10 <Lucifer_arma> and let's face it, the sanfran page pretty much painted him as a killer who deserved to burn in hell for all eternity
10:10 <anjori> i'm using reiser(3)fs, bit don't know really know enough about the pros and cons compared to ext3.
10:11 <Lucifer_arma> well, I can't say I've seen a performance gain, but I have seen some partitions shrink in size
10:11 <Lucifer_arma> my webserver seems to be running slower, but it's also more loaded up than it was when it was on ext3
10:12 <anjori> and an ext4 patch was just announced
10:12 <Lucifer_arma> I think I've got a more serious problem there though, the server's going down seemingly at random. :(
10:12 <Lucifer_arma> what's ext4 supposed to give us over ext3?
10:13 <anjori> hold on, finding the link
10:13 * Lucifer_arma notes that ext3 is a fine filesystem
10:13 <anjori> http://www.kr.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.19-rc1/2.6.19-rc1-mm1/announce.txt
10:14 <anjori> the digg summary: "Andrew Morton released a new -mm patch this morning, it includes, among other things, the new ext4 filesystem patch. The ext4 filesystem promises improved data integrity and performance, among with less limitations."
10:14 <Lucifer_arma> http://lwn.net/Articles/187321/
10:16 <anjori> thats one of the lins i came across earlier when i was looking them up
10:16 <anjori> *links
10:18 <anjori> i'm divided. i've read about some of the ext3 limitations, but then there's arguments against reiser also (mainly what i'm read from a suse dev, and that they decided to drop reiserfs for ext3)
10:19 <Lucifer_arma> wow, I didn't know ext3 was limited to only 8TB. Whatever will we do?
10:19 <Lucifer_arma> I only care about 2 things: stability and performance
10:19 <Lucifer_arma> and stability is more important than performance. :)
10:20 <Lucifer_arma> so I tend to stay away from various filesystem discussions because the stuff people argue about don't matter to me as long as the filesystem is stable and performs reasonably
10:20 <anjori> i'd love stability and no data loss, of course, but having a desktop and not a server where i transfer a lot of media around, performance is nice, too
10:22 <Lucifer_arma> I find the bottleneck for me is the network more often than not
10:23 <Lucifer_arma> after that, it's the CPU
10:23 <anjori> though i've read a bit about optimizing stuff too (like by using hdparm, which i'm afraid to touch), and it's likely, at least in part, my lack of knowledge.
10:23 <Lucifer_arma> but I can see where performance starts to matter even for some desktop applications. Multi-track mixing, for example. What if you have a 32-track digital recording system?
10:24 <Lucifer_arma> so you've taken 32 tracks of 98khz 32-bit float audio and you need to mix them together and then render them out to a 2-track master
10:24 <Lucifer_arma> hdparm is pretty easy, mainly you just make sure you've got the really fast mode turned on (DMA?)
10:24 <Lucifer_arma> so it can use teh 100/133mhz bus instead of the 33mhz bus
10:25 <Lucifer_arma> and then you want the filesystem to basically be defragmented on the fly
10:25 <anjori> dma is on, yes. the other stuff, i don't really know anything about. was reading an article about it, and with the *chance* of data loss and recommeding messing with it in single user mode, i declined
10:25 <Lucifer_arma> yeah, I think I went through that same process with the same result :)
10:26 <Lucifer_arma> I just find that the bottlenecks on my system are usually pretty high above the filesystem. I spend more time waiting for my application to do what I told it to than I do saving/opening files
10:27 <Lucifer_arma> I also trust that there are really good hackers keeping their eyes on the filesystem for me so I don't have to worry about it :)
10:27 <Lucifer_arma> I'm a go grab a smoke and then head to bed, test in the morning

16:32 <wrtlprnft> grr, i hate the w3 for their svg path spec
16:32 <wrtlprnft> it's a pain to parse
16:37 <nemostultae> Yes, it is.
16:37 <wrtlprnft> trying to write something to convert paths to aamaps
16:38 <wrtlprnft> because unfortunately inkscape and oodraw put everything in paths
16:38 <wrtlprnft> so I can't use your converter
16:39 <nemostultae> I think I worked on adding that. I forget if I finished or not.
16:40 <wrtlprnft> once you have the numbers in a better format it should be easy, as there's a good wikipedia page on bézier curves :)
16:41 <nemostultae> I have code that does linetos and closepaths for paths.
16:42 <nemostultae> If you give me a sample svg document I can test it.
16:42 <wrtlprnft> does it read the path according to the w3 specs?
16:42 <wrtlprnft> ie all those little shortcuts it allows
16:42 <wrtlprnft> like writing l123-54..5.6
16:43 <wrtlprnft> which would mean l 123 -54 l 0.5 0.6
16:44 <nemostultae> ugh, doesn't do that.

16:45 <nemostultae> Your vector editor actually produces that?
16:45 <wrtlprnft> no
16:45 <wrtlprnft> but another one might
16:45 <wrtlprnft> though, you're right, i could ignore that for now
16:45 <wrtlprnft> but it does omit that extra l

19:29 <wrtlprnft> nemostultae: how do you run the tests? I can run it from everywhere i want, it never manages to find and include the main svg2aamap module
19:31 <nemostultae> I use rake. “rake test” runs all tests.
19:31 <nemostultae> Or you can run the like this (assuming you are at the top-level directory):
19:31 <nemostultae> ruby -Ilib path/to/test/file
19:31 <nemostultae> run them*
19:33 <wrtlprnft> need to emerge rake
19:33 <wrtlprnft> thought that was a macos-only thing
19:34 <nemostultae> I think rubyforge is down right now… so you won't be able to get it.
19:35 <wrtlprnft> gentoo has it
19:35 <nemostultae> ah

19:35 <nemostultae> rcov is a code coverage tool
19:36 <nemostultae> http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=rcov
19:37 <nemostultae> I also use flexmock (http://onestepback.org/software/flexmock/) to mock objects in some tests.
19:37 <wrtlprnft> marked as unstable, that makes for 97 unstable packages on my system…
19:37 <wrtlprnft> o well
19:41 <nemostultae> this is what rcov does (rake rcov) → http://generalconsumption.org/tmp/coverage/
19:43 <wrtlprnft> “gem install flexmock” takes forever
19:43 <wrtlprnft> gentoo doesn't have it
19:44 <nemostultae> gem uses rubyforge, which is down (their servers crashed).
19:44 <wrtlprnft> oh
19:44 <wrtlprnft> so i could wait forever for it
19:45 <nemostultae> here, I have the gem, let me upload it.
19:46 <nemostultae> http://generalconsumption.org/tmp/flexmock-0.3.2.gem
19:46 <nemostultae> just cd to where the gem is and do gem install flexmock.
19:46 <wrtlprnft> ty
19:46 <wrtlprnft> figured that out already :)

19:48 <wrtlprnft> when /[-+]?\d+(?:\.\d+)?(?:[eE][+-]?\d+)?/
19:48 <wrtlprnft> what are those “?:” after “(” for?
19:50 <nemostultae> (?: ) means don't capture the group
19:50 <wrtlprnft> ah
19:50 <wrtlprnft> must be a ruby extension, never heard of it in other regular expressions (grep, vim, awk, perl etc)
19:50 <nemostultae> it is from perl, IIRC.

20:05 * wrtlprnft thinks he should take the time and read some ruby tutorial
20:06 <nemostultae> Yes, you use ranges: somelist[1..5], where the .. is special syntax to create ranges. You can also do it by calling Range.new(1, 5).

20:47 <wrtlprnft> thanks
20:47 <wrtlprnft> googling on ruby seems to be inefficient
20:48 <nemostultae> For the problems you were having, you can't have a negative length, AFAIK.
20:48 <wrtlprnft> yeah, figured that
20:48 <wrtlprnft> apparently it's [start,length]
20:48 <wrtlprnft> and not [start, end] like in python

20:50 <wrtlprnft> but they are all floats!
20:50 <wrtlprnft> or
20:50 <wrtlprnft> *or doesn't it accept arrays?
20:52 <nemostultae> Yeah, it only accepts floats. You need to loop over your expected array and do assert_in_delta for each element.

20:58 <wrtlprnft> ok, parses C commands now :)
20:59 <wrtlprnft> now, for parsing c commands i have no idea to what the coordinates should be relative. To the last point, or to the last given coordinate, ie the “handles”, too
21:01 <wrtlprnft> so should “M 0 0 c 0,100 100,0 0,-100” evaluate to “M 0 0 C 0,100 100,100 100,0” or “M 0 0 C 0,100 100,0 0,-100”?

This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
