01:40 <Luke-Jr> Vanhayes: they're a ripoff

16:18 <Luke-Jr> wrtlprnft: trying to figure out what 'serverkompetenz' is
16:18 <Luke-Jr> philippeqc: Ruby is based on Python, IIRC
16:19 <Luke-Jr> wrtlprnft: BTW, when anti-aliasing is disabled, the map bg is solid-- might want to make it disappear instead
16:19 <philippeqc> serverkompetenz : server + kompetenz (qualification, skill, competence though that might be french)
16:20 <Lucifer_arma> The language was created by Yukihiro "Matz" Matsumoto, who started working on Ruby on February 24, 1993, and released it to the public in 1995.
16:20 <philippeqc> ok about ruby
16:20 <Luke-Jr> philippeqc: yeah, I meant the host =p
16:21 <Lucifer_arma> Matz's primary design consideration is to make programmers happy by reducing the menial work they must do, following the principles of good user interface design.
16:21 <Lucifer_arma> So, any similarities you find between Ruby and Python aren't entirely coincidental since both languages are developed with similar philosophies

19:29 <wrtlprnft> Luke-Jr: dunno, but it can't be easy
19:29 <Luke-Jr> why not?
19:29 <wrtlprnft> it's not even guaranteed that the map is closed
19:29 <wrtlprnft> and if it is, the closing rim doesn't even need to be one polygon
19:29 <Luke-Jr> if the map isn't closed, then there probably should be no bg
19:30 <wrtlprnft> to make things worse, the rim walls you get are split up in many many small ones
19:30 <wrtlprnft> and of course there's floating point errors
19:30 <Luke-Jr> so you can't draw it and just tell OpenGL to fill everywhere reachable by <player-position>?
19:30 <wrtlprnft> so the map maybe closed for all practical purposes, but yet may not be totally closed
19:30 <wrtlprnft> not that i know of
19:31 <Luke-Jr> aww

20:55 <anjori> as i said, i changed where i put it this time, and even kept the same and re-copied over the same extracted directory as last time. but realizing that may be an issue, i deleted it and started with a fresh tarball
20:55 <anjori> so where is it still pulling the old info from, is the question
21:03 <anjori-nesk> okay, i fixed it.
21:03 <anjori-nesk> there was a hidden file in my home dir called ctypes, which apparently contained the conflicting info. deleting it and attempting to build and install again solved the issue

21:39 <Lucifer_arma> del self.systray
21:39 <Lucifer_arma> self.systray = KSystemTray(yadayada)
21:39 <wrtlprnft> ah, there's a del statement?
21:39 <Lucifer_arma> yeah
21:39 <Lucifer_arma> BUT
21:39 <Lucifer_arma> if you're just changing the icon, there should be something in KSystemTray to let you do that without having to delete it and recreate it
21:40 <wrtlprnft> well
21:40 <Lucifer_arma> thing is, mainWindow holds a reference to it
21:40 <wrtlprnft> i can do what i want without recreating the systray
21:40 <Lucifer_arma> because it should get reparented to whatever mainWindow is
21:40 <wrtlprnft> but then it leaks
21:40 <Lucifer_arma> qt bug?
21:41 <wrtlprnft> pykde bug maybe
21:41 <Lucifer_arma> or kde bug? Hmmm...
21:41 <wrtlprnft> argh
21:41 <wrtlprnft> still getting a new tray every minute…
21:41 <Lucifer_arma> I've got a systray object that uses ctypes instead of pyKDE :)
21:42 <Lucifer_arma> well, the problem is that mainWindow holds a reference to it
21:42 <anjori> heh. and i've had much fun with with ctypes! ;)
21:42 <Lucifer_arma> you could try passing a weakref.proxy object in its place, but that might cause a segfault later on when mainWindow gets deleted
21:42 <wrtlprnft> how do i add two arrays again?
21:42 <wrtlprnft> what's del doing then?
21:43 <Lucifer_arma> well, it's technically deleting self.systray :)
21:43 <wrtlprnft> but not other references to it?
21:43 <Lucifer_arma> but the object that self.systray references may or may not be deleted. The problem here is that you have another reference to it from somewhere, probably within Qt itself
21:43 <Lucifer_arma> rather,
21:43 <Lucifer_arma> it has to be in either pyQt or pyKDE
21:44 <Lucifer_arma> python would garbage collect it if it was a reference within qt because it has no way to know about those
21:44 <Lucifer_arma> what are you trying to do?
21:44 <wrtlprnft> replace the context menu of the systray object
21:44 <wrtlprnft> or its contents to be precise
21:45 <Lucifer_arma> how are you doing it?
21:45 <wrtlprnft> currently i'm calling theContextMenu.clear()
21:45 <wrtlprnft> then deleting my local references to the stuff it contains
21:45 <Lucifer_arma> aha
21:45 <Lucifer_arma> change out your local references to use weakref.proxy
21:45 <wrtlprnft> ?
21:46 <Lucifer_arma> if your local references are hard references, then they won't get garbage collected
21:46 <wrtlprnft> hard references? o_O
21:46 <Lucifer_arma> it's a weird little cycle, but it should work. That's how I solved my own problem where my QListView items weren't getting deleted
21:46 <wrtlprnft> i have a list/array/whatever containing them
21:46 <Lucifer_arma> "hard references" <--- I just made it up to differentiate between references and weakreferences
21:46 <wrtlprnft> whatever you create with []
21:47 <wrtlprnft> then every minute i call contextmenu.clear() and say theArray = []
21:47 <Lucifer_arma> and then you're doing something like theList.append( MyObject() ) ?
21:47 <wrtlprnft> yeag
21:47 <wrtlprnft> *yeah
21:48 <Lucifer_arma> well, when a python program leaks, it's usually one of two things. Either a library underneath the one you're using is leaking (which you may not be able to fix),
21:48 <wrtlprnft> and using theList[index].plug(contextMenu)
21:48 <Lucifer_arma> or you're keeping references to something that prevents it from being garbage-collected
21:48 <Lucifer_arma> circular references are notorious for that
21:48 <wrtlprnft> i wouldn't know where
21:48 <wrtlprnft> that is, i have local vars in functions…
21:49 <Lucifer_arma> when the function is over, local variables get garbage collected and whatever they've referenced gets derefed
21:50 <Lucifer_arma> do you have any sort of structure where you have a qt-derived class holding a reference to one of your classes?
21:50 <wrtlprnft> uh
21:50 <Lucifer_arma> or something where you have two classes holding references to each other?
21:50 <wrtlprnft> i have some classes derived from KAction
21:51 <wrtlprnft> but they don't hold the parent themselves
21:51 <Lucifer_arma> KAction is more than likely derived from QAction or QActionItem or whatever Qt calls it
21:51 -!- [dlh] [n=[dlh]@a1103.upc-a.chello.nl] has joined #armagetron
21:51 <wrtlprnft> that means?
21:51 <Lucifer_arma> do your KAction-derived classes hold references to whatever's in that list?
21:52 <Lucifer_arma> or the list itself?
21:52 <wrtlprnft> not direcly
21:52 <wrtlprnft> actually, do i need the list at all?
21:53 <Lucifer_arma> Um, I don't know. :) What's in it?
21:53 <wrtlprnft> the KActions and other stuff that goes into the menu
21:54 <wrtlprnft> apparently I do...
21:54 <wrtlprnft> strange
21:54 <Lucifer_arma> Hmm
21:54 <wrtlprnft> allplayers = KActionMenu('All online players')
21:54 <Lucifer_arma> Did you try just creating a map to the items? The items are players and servers, right?
21:54 <wrtlprnft> allplayers = KActionMenu('All online players')
21:55 <wrtlprnft> err
21:55 <wrtlprnft> allplayers.plug(cm)
21:55 <wrtlprnft> that one
21:55 <wrtlprnft> if i do that the menu item won't appear
21:55 <Lucifer_arma> what's 'cm'?
21:56 <wrtlprnft> the context menu
21:56 <wrtlprnft> cm = self.systray.contextMenu()
21:56 <wrtlprnft> somewhere near the start of the function
21:56 <Lucifer_arma> aha, I think that's where the ref-count problem is
21:56 <wrtlprnft> ?
21:57 <Lucifer_arma> cm holds a reference to the systray's context menu, right?
21:57 <wrtlprnft> should
21:57 <Lucifer_arma> which in turn holds a reference to the systray
21:57 <wrtlprnft> probably
21:58 <Lucifer_arma> how hard would it be to rearrange it so that instead of deleting and recreating the menu, you're just hiding/showing based on the latest poll?
21:58 <wrtlprnft> i'm not deleting the menu, though
21:58 <wrtlprnft> just calling its clear() function
21:58 <wrtlprnft> very hard
22:00 <wrtlprnft> what's the deconstructor called again?
22:01 <wrtlprnft> the opposite of __init__
22:01 <Lucifer_arma> destructor?
22:01 <Lucifer_arma> ah
22:01 <Lucifer_arma> __del__ I think
22:01 <Lucifer_arma> but it's not guaranteed to be called
22:01 <wrtlprnft> argh
22:01 <wrtlprnft> great
22:01 <Lucifer_arma> heh
22:01 <wrtlprnft> i wanted to derive a class from KActionMenu
22:01 <wrtlprnft> and have it print a message on creation and destruction
22:01 <Lucifer_arma> I should restate that, it's not guaranteed to be called under certain circumstances taht I always forget
22:02 * wrtlprnft goes google
22:03 <Lucifer_arma> the list stores a server list?
22:04 <wrtlprnft> it stores KActionMenus and and objects derived from KAction
22:04 <wrtlprnft> and a KStdAction.quit
22:05 <wrtlprnft> the list is just to keep them around. If i don't they get garbage collected and never appear in the context menu
22:06 <Lucifer_arma> isn't there a KActionList you can store them in?
22:08 <wrtlprnft> ?
22:09 <wrtlprnft> well, what i'm doing is something like this:
22:09 <wrtlprnft> i=0
22:09 <wrtlprnft> theArray=[]
22:09 <wrtlprnft> theArray.append(KActionMenu(blah))
22:09 <wrtlprnft> theMenu=theArray[i]
22:10 <wrtlprnft> i=i+1
22:10 <wrtlprnft> theArray.append(KAction(blah))
22:10 <wrtlprnft> theAction=theArray[i]
22:10 <wrtlprnft> i=i+1
22:10 <wrtlprnft> theAction.plug(theMenu)
22:10 <wrtlprnft> theMenu.plug(contextMenu)
22:10 <wrtlprnft> replace theArray with self.theArray
22:11 <wrtlprnft> so it's persistent
22:11 <wrtlprnft> and i'm doing that every minute
22:11 <Lucifer_arma> you might want to rethink how you're handling your data then. You're ending up with list items that point at each other
22:12 <Lucifer_arma> they might be getting removed from all the lists appropriately so they leave the menu like you expect, but it looks like they might not be getting garbage-collected at all
22:12 <wrtlprnft> just made an __del__ function, they aren'T
22:12 -!- cusco_ is now known as cusco
22:12 <wrtlprnft> they are deleted as i exit the program
22:13 -!- DrJoeTron [n=DrJoeTr0@adsl-64-108-203-5.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net] has quit [">-;;,ccc3"]
22:13 <Lucifer_arma> I would make a class that represents the menu and have it inherit the KContextMenu class, I think
22:14 <Lucifer_arma> then give it a method for adding new menu items based on my data from the xml file
22:14 <Lucifer_arma> it would iterate through all of its children/grandchildren/etc (recursively if needed) and check to see if it already had something and only add it when it already has it
22:14 <Lucifer_arma> er
22:14 <Lucifer_arma> only add it when it doesn't already have it
22:14 <Lucifer_arma> I think, anyway
22:15 <Lucifer_arma> I don't know, I might do it different than that. :)
22:15 <wrtlprnft> hmm
22:15 <wrtlprnft> i can try that…
22:16 <Lucifer_arma> what I've found in general is that you want to hold references to qt-derived classes, but you don't want qt-derived classes holding references to your stuff
22:16 <Lucifer_arma> unless you can delegate it to a level much lower than your program
22:16 <wrtlprnft> now you completely confused me
22:16 <Lucifer_arma> so when in a situation where you have to have a qt-derived class reference your own data, a weakref.proxy is called for, which means you have to inherit the qt class yourself, I think
22:17 <wrtlprnft> but in some cases I'd need to delete servers from the list, right?
22:17 <Lucifer_arma> ok, here's what happened to me that I worked out with a weakref.proxy
22:17 <wrtlprnft> because they go empty
22:17 <Lucifer_arma> :) have the master menu class on its interval iterate through the list and call .hide() on servers that have no players :)
22:18 <Lucifer_arma> anyway, what happened to me is I inherited QListViewItem and had it store a reference to each individual song on the playlist
22:18 <Lucifer_arma> same problem with the alarm panel, it worked the same way
22:18 <Lucifer_arma> then I called QListView->clear()
22:18 <Lucifer_arma> playlist.clear()
22:18 * wrtlprnft is reading on weakref
22:18 <Lucifer_arma> and the QlistView didn't clear
22:19 <Lucifer_arma> so then I made my QListViewItems store a weakref.proxy object instead and it fixed it in both places (the alarm panel and the playlist panel)

23:21 <wrtlprnft> then you can ssh from the client (the one that has id_rsa) to the server (the one that has the contents of id_rsa.pub) without a password
23:21 <wrtlprnft> [Xpert]DarkStar: contents
23:21 <[Xpert]DarkStar> still asks me for a password
23:21 <wrtlprnft> if it's your first key just copy the entire file
23:22 <wrtlprnft> you have ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 on the server and ~/.ssh/id_rsa on the client?
23:22 <[Xpert]DarkStar> ah
23:23 <wrtlprnft> and it'll ask you for the passphrase, unless you left it empty
23:23 <[Xpert]DarkStar> well... i did leave it empty ^^
23:23 <[Xpert]DarkStar> and it works now
23:23 <wrtlprnft> :)
23:24 <[Xpert]DarkStar> :D
23:24 * [Xpert]DarkStar is happy
23:24 <[Xpert]DarkStar> thnx
23:24 <wrtlprnft> infact my laptop is even configured to only accept keys, no passwords
23:24 <wrtlprnft> yw
23:24 <wrtlprnft> just for the server i still accept password logins for emergencies when i don't have the key
23:26 <[Xpert]DarkStar> what if someone steals the keyfile from my client?
23:26 <wrtlprnft> then they have access
23:27 <wrtlprnft> that's why you have passphrases and ssh-agent
23:28 <[Xpert]DarkStar> one would have to hack 2 machines before being able to get that file
23:29 <wrtlprnft> well, if they can get a hidden file chances are they can execute any code, right?
23:29 <wrtlprnft> and if they can do that they can as well install a keyboard logger or something
23:30 <[Xpert]DarkStar> yes
23:30 <[Xpert]DarkStar> the only real security that exists is not connecting a machine to the internet...
23:30 <Lucifer_arma> I wrap my machines with latex
23:30 <wrtlprnft> and putting it into a big safe without any power supply
23:30 <[Xpert]DarkStar> probably
23:31 <[Xpert]DarkStar> or maybe try Lucifer_arma's method ;)
23:31 * Lucifer_arma is irritated
23:31 <wrtlprnft> and put your grandmother in front of it with a big rolling pin (?)
23:31 <Lucifer_arma> mambo 4.5.1 won't instlal into mysql 5 :(
23:31 <[Xpert]DarkStar> mambo? isnt that some cms?
23:31 <Lucifer_arma> yeah

• Website was created by nelg
• Design:
» Layout is loosely based on an old design by Durf.
» Icons on the tools page were originally by Royce, new icons added will try to follow some of the design language.
» Various other icon selections include icons from Crystal, crystalsvg, oxygen, and breeze icon themes.
» Other icons: fontawesome

is a site that has tools, maps, and other various items. It orignally only existed as a server control panel, but I slowly began adding stuff such as a homepage and tools.

This is an LLM-free zone. In general, I am unwilling to use (fight with) any form of "GenAI" to write code for me. So, for the forseeable future, everything on this site will continue to be written by a very silly goose (wait that's me honk honk) with some parts written by other humans as well (silly hu-mon) rather than any plausible-series-of-words token-eating machine. Even my libraries are out of date, and suddenly that's a good thing!
(Although the style has changed several times and content has been added and changed, the base of this site has barely been updated since 2015. But it Ain't Broke!)
This site is also occasionally tested with older browsers, but compatibility is not guarenteed. Although, if you have an old obscure browser and something isn't working that previously did, I guess you can tell me (nelg) about it...
