Some people find a more organised game mode easier to pick up, so my suggestion would be to try everything - but not all at once. If there are more people in a deathmatch-type server, like classic sub/yellow sub, just roll with it. If there's a pickup match happening, or a pub fort match is playing, give that a shot.

It's a game mode cooked up by an ex member that features the same mechanics, but has a little script running that lets you play in a all-vs-one play style. It's quite fun, imo.
