[20:57:04] <Lucifer_arma> Z-Man: I want to run some technobabble by you right quick. It's for a time travel story I want to write as a response to Stephen Hawking suggesting that science ffiction authors are stupid for not using imaginary time as a plot device.
[20:57:41] <Lucifer_arma> Ok, so you take a look at the complex number plane and ask what exactly an imaginary number is. To answer that, you have to say what a real number is, right?
[20:57:58] <Lucifer_arma> So I answer that with "matter". All matter, even antimatter.
[20:58:37] <Lucifer_arma> Now you have a matter axis and an imaginary matter axis. Turn the imaginary matter axis into imaginary time, and you end up putting a real time axis in there, two, orthogonal to the other two axes
[20:59:01] <Lucifer_arma> Now you have a three dimensional representation of the universe in simplistic mathematical terms.
[21:00:00] <Lucifer_arma> when you then look at the relationship between each of these axes, one thing becomes clear: we can only observe matter that is on the same time vector we're on, typically imagined as linear, along the axis.
[21:00:39] <Lucifer_arma> that solves both the dark matter question (it's matter we can't see, but it still affects what we can see) as well as the antimatter question (same answer, it's there, but we can't see it)
[21:01:56] <Lucifer_arma> I still need a way to bridge to time travel, other than saying that there's some sort of mechanical friction that can be applied to the other dimensions, allowing a person to get off of the time vector they're on, accelerate through other time vectors, and ultimately return to their original time vector at some arbitrary point, thus enabling time travel :)
[21:02:20] <Lucifer_arma> maybe I'll use gravitational waves or something.
[21:02:40] <Lucifer_arma> anyway, is that reasonably plausible technobabble, or is it complete babble? ;)
[21:06:48] <Lucifer_arma> also, it explains why light behaves like a particle and a wave: it's actually a wave, but the particle observations appear when you consider that you can only see in one time vector
[21:10:15] <Lucifer_arma> ok, thinking some more, I think that that 3d representation could be called "gravity" and explain what gravity actually is and why it works like it does, meaning if I can make something that can attach to gravity like a tire on a road, I can move through gravity.
[21:10:38] <Lucifer_arma> or, alternately, if I can generate a gravitational force, somehow, then I can move through gravity like a rocket moves through space
[21:15:12] <Lucifer_arma> (also, before you ask, no, I explicitly did *not* want to use imaginary time as the basis for alternate universes, even though I think that's what Hawking did)
